Drawer vs Door Dishwasher

I recently looked at the Kitchenaid Double Drawer dishwasher and loved it. I would really like like some opinions on drawer vs door diswashers - i.e., any difference. also if anyone has one of these double drawer dishwashers and could comment on pros and cons that would be great.

I have a Kenmore Elite double drawer dishwasher, and I don't think I would buy one again. Over-sized dishes just don't fit in it. There are only 3 of us in the house, so one drawer is adequate for most occasions, but it just irritates me to have to hand wash any platters or larger than normal plates, it sort of defeats the purpose of using a dishwasher. On the other hand, it's very pretty and I get alot of positive comments on it's appearance.

Thinking about getting the Kenmore drawer DW but never thought about a lg. platter not fitting so thanks for this insight. There's only the 2 of us and family on opposite coast so only lg. dinners few times a yr. so probably handwashing lg. platter no big deal for me. Otherwise do you like it?

We have a Fisher Paykel. LOVE IT!! We had one a few years ago, then we kind of remodeled a smaller house and put in a regular door DW, and couldn't wait until our house now was built to use our 2nd FP DD. We are a family of three and I can really stuff things in there. I always washed big platters by hand anyway, so that didn't bother me. We only use both drawers about once a week. There was no question about gettlng DD in this house.

Olliesmom thanks. That answered my question. I can wash the big platters by hand. I rarely use those (at best at holidays). The drawers in the showroom seem way more convenient than my door dw, which doesn't hold large platters that well either.

Large items can fit depending on what else is in the load, and if one gets creative (but careful) with loading patterns. I can get my 16" microwave turntable in by balancing it atop the silverware basket handle and other accommodating items. My insulated cookie sheets, however, really are too large to fit.

The top drawer is so convenient to use. And, like I said, we don't use the bottom drawer that much, but it isn't much different than bending over in a regular dishwasher door. In our last house, we had the best of both worlds, and had one on each side of the sink, but, this house's kitchen, wouldn't allow for that much space.

I am also glad how well the FP DD dry. That was something that was very important to me. I make sure I keep Jet Dry in them and now use the fast cycle and the dishes are still dry, maybe a little water on top of glasses that have deep indentions on bottom.

I have a single drawer kitchenaid, and I'm happy with it. Still, drawers are a bit more confined -- with two you'd have more options. One difference may be the larger open bottom rack in a regular DW lets you arrange deep pots a little easier. I really like being able to run a load with fewer items and not feel like I'm wasting water/energy.

I can't speak for the other brands, but F&P units are frugal on energy. I checked mine with a Kill-a-Watt meter, and found the longest, hottest cycle (Heavy non-Eco) uses 0.68 KWH of power, and that's heating the water fully from tap cold (main wash to 150°F, final rinse to 163°F). At an example electric rate of 15 cents per KWH, running a drawer costs about 10 cents (not including detergent & rinse aid). Lower cycles will be accordingly less.

We have a Fisher Paykel Dishwasher that I've posted about a few times.

It's been nothing but trouble. Now that we understand dishwashers more than we ever wanted to, we can see why the drawer design has more problems.

We have had more than TWENTY service calls over 5 years. They eventually replaced the first one with a new one - and after six service calls in one month (and two major floods that ruined our brand new kitchen floor), we gave up. I will say that the service person was befuddled by the F and P - there are only a few in our area, and he just didn't know what he was doing.

The short version of what doesn't/didn't work about EITHER of our F and P drawers is the pumping system. The pump needed to clear out the lower drawer just never works (and the lid motors have failed repeatedly - that's the part that seals one drawer off from the other).

Research your KitchenAid drawer DW carefully - go read reviews on epinions and Amazon.com

We will *never* buy another drawer dishwasher, there's a reason that most diahwashers have been and always will be door-based instead. Read reviews of the best dishwashers to see how many drawer-models there are.

We thought we could live with the lack of flexibility in size of objects put into a drawer (and we have - since only one drawer at a time has ever worked consistently), but I'd opt for a zoned dishwasher with a door any day of the week. You can save just as much water and energy with the newer dishwashers that only clean one rack at a time, and without the INCREDIBLE HASSLE OF THE VARIOUS MOTORS that have to operate in a drawer model.

I've posted about this before, but I'm back today to try and search for a new diahwasher (we've given up altogether on the F and P- and we're not the only people on this forum who have had that problem). If you're lucky and get a good one, I'm happy for you, though - they are very nice to look at and do get dishes clean when they are working.

Bosch was going to be our next choice, but the houses burning down due to faulty electronics, the lawsuits and the late recall notices are now turning me off Bosch.

So if anyone has a dishwasher to recommend - at all - I'd love to hear what it is!
