I need to run the vent for my range hood. My two options are either to run it straight up and build a soffit/chase around it or to run it on top of the cabinets and through the side wall. It would then go up through a closet and exhaust. Obviously, going through the side will add pipe length and transitions, but it will be more aesthetically pleasing. What are your thoughts on a soffit going up the wall?

I am planning on using Broan PM390, but I can use another assembly if recommended. The hood requires a T shaped liner.
