I can think of two minor advantages to french doors over side swing. One is that you don't need so much room in order to swing the door open - just like a french door fridge. The other is that the manufacturer only has to make one kind, they don't have to worry about which side the door opens on. And if they only made side swing doors in one direction, they wouldn't be useful for some people.

I am thrilled to see this development. When I couldn't find a french door oven to replace mine in 2011, I even wrote to the various companies suggesting that they make one. Maybe lots of people did the same thing. Or maybe they're copying the higher-end manufacturers. Someday, when my Elux dies I hope I'll be able to get a french door oven again! Yay!

Ginny20 makes some good points but I bet the main reason people buy these is looks. My sister could not steer clear of a Viking double french door oven no matter how many times she was warned by myself and others.

I wish they would start making non Pro Style french door ovens. I don't want my residential kitchen to look like a restaurant kitchen, nor do I need to pretend to use commercial equipment to be confident in my results.

You don't open two doors - you open one and the other opens at the same time. My 1961 model did that, too. I loved my french door oven because I could reach in easily. You just stand in front of it and pull out the rack, and you don't have to reach over the hot door. Easier to reach in for cleaning, too. Ergonomically, it's much nicer. Lee makes a good point, though, that it would be harder to see into a bisected window. (My old one didn't have any windows at all, so I had to open it to see progress). Still, I would definitely buy one of these if I were in the market today. The only reason I didn't get french doors in 2011 was the price - I couldn't swing $6500 for American Range.
