dehumidifier recycling, how???

I have a 15 yr old dehumidifier that no longer cools well. I suspect the freon has partially leaked out. I'd rather not trash it and send the freon into the atmosphere, but the only option I've found is to pay my trash hauler $60 to handle it. My electric co and township public works won't take it.

Anyone have any cheap alternatives I haven't thought of but remain green?

My county solid waste association directed me to a business that took my dehumidifier last month; they are also a general metal scrap business. If you have one of those around, ask them if they can help you or direct you. I had to lug it to them; hopefully you can corral someone into helping you heave it into the car.
