dishwasher/garbage disposal problems

the dishwasher started coming up thru the overflow a while back, then last week it went nuts. i took off the lower handle and cleaned it all out, still does the same thing. and now the garbage disposal won't work. the reset button is in, the blades turn freely forward and backward and it makes no sound. i always have water running when using. never put oil, grease, potato peels, egg shells, stuff like that in it. they are both about 4 years old. my boyfriend wants to know what i did to them. any ideas?

Did you check to ensure the breaker for the disposal hasn't tripped?

Does the sink drain properly?

MaYbe it just died. Time to get a new one.

Not related to a clogged ptrap which caused the back up. Did you Clean out the p- tap too or just the pipe coming out of the disposal?
