Induction: Bridge or not?

What's the importance of having a 'bridge' feature on an induction cooktop?

With our past stoves, electric & gas, I could put a large grill/griddle pan over two burners and just turn 'em both on. Do Inductions not work this way? What's the significance of "bridging" two burners?

I've been leaning towards the 36" Bosch 500 series. But I see they just release the Benchmark series with a pair of "FlexInduction" bridge burners. Of course the new one is nearly double the price. Not sure I need to pay $1000 more for some linked burners.
