Are we supposed to 'season' the Blue Star grates

Should I be doing anything to the Blue Star cast iron grates before starting to cook on the stove? Should they be oiled? heated and oiled? Anything?

I did the standard burnoff for the oven but there were no instructions about the grates.

No, they are porcelain glazed just like French porcelain coated cast iron. Because the porcelain is slightly rough, it will take a season, (like the black porcelain inside a Staub pot), but I personally would not bother.

Seasoning is just a very thin carbonized coating of fat (or oil) and it wears off and even burns off at hotter temps.

I am letting my grates season "naturally." Simply put, if oil gets on them I just wipe off with a paper towel. If something water soluble spills on it I just wipe up with a damp sponge. No detergents.

Over time they blacken just like a cast iron pan. Then you have beautiful black grates with the unmistakable patina.

Compare that to scrubbing the heck out of them all the time to get back to the gray porcelain? Not for me, thanks! :)

If you are more of a looker than a cooker you may want to lightly season the grates. If you're a cooker and not a looker your grates will naturally season and will need little care other than the occasional cleaning from spill overs.

Got my Bluestar 36" 6 burner back in October. Except for major spills, which I've so far managed to avoid, all I do is a nightly wipedown with a barely damp sponge. The grates still look like new.
