Yes, if it isn't a head-bumping hazard at the installed height and if you put a stainless steel panel at the back that covers the 2-inch gap and slopes downward so the rising effluent has a shallow angle of reflection.

One wants overlap of rising expanding effluent. The expansion half-angle can
be 22.5 degrees from the pan hot surface edge outward (for very hot
cooking). Not all of this will necessarily be captured, but if a side sketch of
the surface with pans located on burners is drawn, best placement of a given
hood depth is easier to see. (More exactly, placement of a given hood
aperture space is easier to see.)

My island hood is placed so that it is centered front-to-back over the
cook-top hobs layout center, not the cook-top center or the counter center.
The interior aperture front-to-back depth is 26 inches. Counting decorative
bars, the total front-to-back depth is 37 inches.

Bottom line is that only you can answer your question.
