HELP...Miele Speed Oven Worth the Money?

cgc3

I have been reading so many posts about some people that love their Miele Speed Ovens and others that wish they had spent their money elsewhere. I just chose my appliances for my kitchen remodel and am very conflicted about the Miele Speed Ovens. Some rave about them while others complain about the interior being impossible to clean, having to remove the rack every time they use the mw only, Miele's TERRIBLE customer service, and even that the instruction manuals are a joke. I know tons of these are sold each year. Am I getting a good picture of what I'm buying or just a string of isolated problems? I HAVE to change my cabinet drawings THIS week if I need to move to another product. PLEASE...anyone not experiencing these complaints? Anyone recommend their speed ovens???? PLEASE RESPOND!!!!

Oh yes, the manual is ridiculous. Almost unusable. But once you get used to the oven, it is pretty easy.

    Customer service is fine.

have the master chef for over 2 years and use it everyday...

have used almost all of the functions and love them all, even the master chef...cooks evenly, heats quickly, just a joy to use....

yes the glass tray is tough to clean but my DH does a good job of it and he also cleans the interior.. to me this are minor issues compared to the use and functionality of the appliance...
i have the touch screen, honestly bought it over the knobs because so much easier to clean and i think it looks nicer, i know that sounds stupid, but its what i wanted and now I'm glad i did because i really do use all the functions...

yes, u have to take the rack out if only microwaving, but its not a big deal here since i have a counter next to it and storage above, so non-issue here..

as far as the manual, once u get used to the machine, very easy to use.
as far as customer service, have not dealt with them yet and hope i never have to, fingers crossed......

if i move i would buy another one, love this appliance..it really is great!!!

I'm reviving this discussion. I bought the miele speed oven with masterchef after reading tons of reviews, mostly on gardenweb. This oven was one of my biggest mistakes in my kitchen. I hate it and can't believe I spent over $2k on what is basically a microwave. To clarify, I wanted the masterchef mode but couldn't afford retail so I purchased a miele showroom never used model with masterchef for $2k.

I've had this installed for about 4 months and am on my second service call. The metal rack sparks when using it in combi mode. The glass tray in combi mode blocks air circulation so cooking sucks. With sub par combination cooking, that basically leaves me with a mini oven and a microwave. In other words, I could have bought a $200 breville toaster oven and a $500 built in microwave and had the same outcome for a lot less.

Who sells an appliance with a microwave where the metal tray has to be removed 80% of the time? STUPID.

Also, masterchef is a joke. I thought it would be some miracle menu of items to cook like the GE Advantium has. It doesn't even have cookies on it. My choices for baked goods are sponge cake, angel food cake, muffins, baguette and fruit pies... because these are items we all make everyday.

I think the speed oven doesn't have a turntable. Has this turned out to important in any way?

  • hvtech42

Nope, the Miele speed oven doesn't need a turntable. It uses a mechanism that evenly distributes the microwaves. A bit more expensive to produce than a turntable but a superior system.

Michelle - were you aware that you could program any settings you like to the favorites menu in masterchef ?

You could make a cookies, or soufflés, or science project entry and have it cook any way you want for any amount of time you'd like.

Very timely as I'm trying to make the decision about getting a speed oven or not. There seems to be very differing opinions here, so makes it a bit more of a difficult decision!

Differing opinions are simply a reflection on people in general.

Some will love it, some will hate it, and most won't feel one way or another and you won't ever hear from that segment.

Same with whether the manual is good or a joke and if it's hard to clean or not. Depends on your definition of clean.

I have a Miele speed oven, the H6100. Mine has knobs and 9 different settings. I love it. It's the oven we use daily. Like nycbluedevil, I also have a 36" range, but that oven takes a while to heat up, so the speed oven is our "main" oven. It heats up incredibly fast. It's large on the inside, and it cooks all sorts of things very well. I don't mind changing out the racks. Most of the time we don't even bother taking out the glass rack when we use the oven. You're supposed to but we don't. No problems thus far. We don't use it in microwave mode that often. You have to remove the metal rack when you do (though not for combi bake). I set the rack on our stove top and it hasn't been an issue. If you're planning to use this oven as a microwave a lot, this could become annoying, so you'll want to have a place to store the metal rack on a regular basis.

Xedos, I have put some things in favorites, but it's not the same as having a vast library in master chef. The GE Advantium has like 175 preset things to make, and that's with the speed technology. Cookies for example, have a preset option on the advantium, in 7 minutes it combines convection cooking with microwaves to make your frozen cookies. With the Miele, all the guess work about with cooking modes to combine is on me, which was not what I was expecting.

  • xedos

I understand. It's simply two different philosophies.

GE is for fast food crowd and Miele for the techno OCD chef.

The miele allows YOU to customize preset to what you like and a lot of them. You could have a favorite for a certain amount of defrosting for instance. And could choose which heat source it used independently. The GE only has 25 or so locations and is , I believe, only for speedcook.

So, a bit less flexible - but better suiting your needs with all the built in items.

FWIW - you have to remove the metal rack from the Advantiums for microwaving too !

When I did my last kitchen, about 4 years ago, I was looking at the both the 240v Advantium and the Miele. Our requirements were:

    1) Has to fit undercounted (my daughter is short)

    2) Has to be both a Microwave and an oven

    3) These things are expensive, so it needs to show well as well.

In looking at the Advantium, I had the following issues:

    1) The 240v machine does not look like a $2500 oven, it looks like a $1000 microwave

    2) You cannot mount the 240v under a counter

    3) It uses a halogen light for the oven, so I was not impressed with this setup.

The Miele was all of the things the Advantium was not. Even though my range was a 36" Wolf, we used the Miele as the primary oven as the Wolf took significantly longer to heat up as it has true heating elements. We also found it to be a great microwave. Here are the issues I had with it:

    1) The glass rack broke within the first year. So we did with out that as it was about $150 to replace it. I don't recommend washing it to frequently as this was probably our downfall.

    2) there were drips in between the glass on the door. Miele stated that they would replace this but we moved and did not bother with it.

Beyond that, we loved it. Enough that the new one with the comfort swivel handle is going to be a centerpiece of our new kitchen (to match the Miele Range which I believe is where we are going). I don't have room for a second oven and a Microwave, so this is really the best situation for our kitchen. One other item I like is that you can get a 5 year warranty on the Miele for only 7.5% additional, which is probably a good thing for an item like this. Let us know what you ended up picking as I am sure you will like it as both choices are really solid, I just had my preferences.

I will admit I'm still fleshing out the merits of this oven. Miele replaced my sparking rack so I can now combi cook, yet baking cookies in combi in a glass pan hasn't been faster and has yielded sub par results to traditional heat on an insulated sheet. This speed oven does have the advantage of fast pre heat. It reaches 350 degrees in about 2 minutes. And I agree that the under counter mount is a plus and why we ruled out the advantium. But I still regret buying this oven over the Bosch benchmark new speed oven. It didn't do many combination cooking modes but it was about half the cost of Miele, broiled, baked and microwaved.

And I can see how someone who has a large, gas pro range would find value in a mini oven. I opted for a 30" wall oven and warming drawer so the Miele needed to be my microwave with perks, different from other posters.
  • Austin B

Ah, yes, if I had room for a 30" wall oven and a microwave, I would probably have gone a different route than the Miele.

Silly me. I just realized that the OTR microwave I have is a 120v Advantium (we just bought this house and moved in June). Until now we have only been using it as a microwave. I tried it today to reheat something and it performed pretty well. We will have to play with it some more before we change out the kitchen and it will probably be our kitchen stove/oven while we remodel :). It just won't fit in with the other appliances and also won't go under counter. I also did not like to see the drip issue that others have spoken about but hopefully that is fixed so it will not be an issue for people who are buying new versions. So, I

Own one and don't think it was worth the money. Primarily because I thought this would facilitate microwaving AND conventional cooking dishes at same time to speed the cooking. I haven't used it once for that. The help (either from the manufacturer or online) on how to get this type of use (e.g. recipies) is almost non existent and frustrating. In fact the manufacturer doesn't really help you clearly understand the difference between all the various basic options, and the preprogramed modes are few. I consider myself fairly technical and capable too.

Own one. Not worth the money. Hard to clean and stains that never clean. Now sparking because a coating wore off a nut that holds the heating element up.

Worst purchase of our kitchen reno. No turntable. Uneven microwave heating. Will probably throw it out and get a dedicated microwave. What a waste of a lot of money. If we had space for separate microwave somewhere else would consider it an ok second oven.

We have had ours for two months. Works fine as a microwave, mostly reheating. Very good as an oven. Small cabinet heats up fast. Lots of cooking modes. Still learning. Doing a slow cook roast with the probe today.

I entirely agree that Miele customer service is the worst. I have all Miele products, installed 10 years ago, when they produced good, reliable kitchen appliances. Thankfully, I have only had trouble with the dishwasher—-every two years it needs repair. Each time it needs repair, it takes 1-3 months to get it repaired!

I am building a new home and have been researching kitchen appliances. I have been advised that Miele products have deteriorated in quality since I bought them 10 years ago (2010); and since I have had experience with their customer service on more than one occasion, I would advise anyone looking to buy kitchen appliances to steer clear of Miele. Apparently, Miele is too cheap to train and retain good product repairmen; and possibly they are producing poor quality appliances as well.

We have owned the speed oven for 8 years (H4080BM). We liked it and compared to other options are getting a newer model the H7240BMCTS. We use it 85% as an oven and 15% microwave. Agree with many comments re customer service. Very frustrating not be be able to get any technical assistance from Miele customer service. Recently, microwave stopped working properly, and produced an open flame on the ceiling of the unit. Metal coating came off on rag where I tried to clean up the burn marks. Sure some food debris likely caused the flame I guess, but why was metal coming off with the food residue. Miele was able to offer no information about this event. One online "service specialist" said this was caused by a bent part that distributes the microwaves and is not reparable. Rather than spend $200 on a service call to find out it can't be repaired we put that money into a new machine. Cleaning is difficult (particularly in between the broiler elements and the glass try is just impossible to keep clean), surface seems to really hang on to stains but that did not bother us. Manual is very poorly written suggesting that it was ok to microwave with metal rack in on one page and that it was "not recommended" on another page. Oddly enough we had no sparking when we left the rack and glass tray in on microwave mode (though I don't recommend this). Does anyone else leave the rack and tray in when microwaving? Sparking?

Convection cooking was excellent, fits half sheet pans, no problem. Cooking is very even and temperature seems very precise. We use this oven every day - everything from roasting to baking. Its easy to use. Its the perfect second over to our larger range. We like that microwave does not have a turntable (all other similar speed/combination ovens seem to), makes it a lot easier to heat up more than one plate. All that being said, if we don't get more than 10 years out of this unit we will be very disappointed and looking for a new option.

Hi i just found this thread and wanted to give my opinion on the Miele speed Oven.
I remodeled my kitchen 15 years ago this month and the Miele Speed Oven (2008 model) was, without a doubt, one of the most loved pieces of equipment I put into my kitchen including my Miele DW and my fancy fridge. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE that oven. I had 4 teenagers at the time of the install and it was so easy to teach them to microwave/cook using the oven. We are a very foodie family and the oven got heavy use whilst the kids were home. It microwaves, roasts, bakes, broils and can do 2 combinations of the functions. Yes the glass tray is annoying to clean but I dont care. Also, I’ve NEVER removed the metal tray for the microwave function since we were told we didn’t need to. Never had a problem with it. In the manual it says the best time to clean the oven is after using and while hot and I’ve found that to be true. I use a scrubby pad and some baking soda to remove dried bits. It’s never spotless but I couldn’t care less. It is my kitchen friend and I use it every day. At feast times, it easily out-preforms my big oven. It’s still going strong and long may it continue. Made the most awesomely perfect custard in it for Val. Day. And the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving always comes out silky and smooth.
The single beef I have against the oven is that the “finished” beep of the microwave doesn’t auto turn off when you open the door. You have to press off or it will continue to beep till the cows come home. Maybe in the newer models that is fixed.
If you are considering buying a speed oven and are willing to shell out, get this one. I’ve never regretted the expense and am still in love with it.
