installing hood over tile

Well, our lovely American Range Performer was installed yesterday, and I haven't even done burn-off yet, because they refused to install the hood because the backsplash had been installed to the ceiling, as our original contractor (who actually just never responded to repeated requests to finish the backsplash) said it HAD to be done that way. So we got someone else to finish the bs. Okay, so now the installers said they couldn't install the hood because it required a special drill bit (seems like they would just have it, but there is probably something I don't know about it). We found a guy through the super who will do it for $450, which we may do. Is this outrageous/ reasonable? What should we do?

DH used special diamond-tip drill bits to drill through our glass tile in order to install the hood. Took his time, slowly, slowly, carefully, I think we ended up with a teeny tiny crack in one tile--totally hidden by the screw and hood.

Then our plumber arrives to install the pot filler faucet, along with its screw-in escutcheon. Zip-zip with the drill, probably a normal drill bit, and it was done in seconds, no cracks.

Our hood was installed (just 3 days ago) over backsplash tiles that were tiled all the way up to ceiling. Just like yours. No problem drilling through the tiles. My cabinet guy installed that for me. Free of charge. He said he just has to use those drill bits for tiles. And I saw him pouring little bit of water over the drill bit as he drilled. I also remember my tiler said since my backsplash tile is marble, it is less prone to crack. If it were porcelain the risk of cracking is higher.
