What you are looking for is a hood insert but before buying one you need to know the size of your range/cooktop,will it have a grill/griddle,what type of cooking do you do,fried food etc. Where will it be vented,through a side wall or the roof? There are many variables to consider before finally deciding on what you need. A good system that is quiet is not inexpensive but well worth the money if your cooking needs require a good one.

I'm assuming you are making an informed decision by putting your range in your island (safety concerns as well as the aesthetics) and that you are taking precautions to protect bystanders. So...

Think about how the hood will look hanging in the middle of the room...do you want it to make a statement or be more discrete. If more discrete, then I would not get a boxed in hood, rather I would get one of the ones that aren't quite so obvious...like the ones linked below.

If you do want it to be the focal point, then go ahead w/the boxed in insert...just remember that it will be in the middle of your kitchen and be sure your kitchen is big enough to handle such a looming presence.

We've been very happy with our island range hood, purchased from an ebay seller, jayjuan (Jasmine hood), about 5 years ago. We hired an electrician/general contractor to do the ductwork and vent it to the outside. It's been a real workhorse. I'd highly recommend this type of hood.
