Large, heavy dishes...which dishwasher?

Posted by lafacia (My Page) on

I recently got new dishes and they are a oversized and heavy. Hadn't thought about them fitting in the dishwasher when I bought them. We are renovating our kitchen now and I need to choose a new dishwasher. Dishes are not a great fit in our current GE. Can anyone recommend dishwashers - or a dishwasher - that would accommodate the larger dishes? Thanks!

What dishes, how thick and diameter? Ours are thick, but standard diameter. They stack beautifully on the bottom rack of a Miele. If I load them on the left, I put the first plate off-set between the left slot and right groove, and continue to stack. Hard to explain, but think of it sort of like buttoning your shirt one button off and continuing all the way down. My plates have a thick rim (Portmeirion), and I can line up 15. With my rack set-up, it accomdates 12" diameter plates.

I was one of those people who brought a sampling of my plates in varying sizes, and bowls, etc. to the store where I bought my Miele. It was a bit of an inconvenience to tote that bagful around the store, but well worth it in the end. I didn't do it with the hunk-of-junk it replaced, and I always wished I had. Do yourself a favor and try a fitting before you settle on your DW.

Not my Maytag. Same problem. I've figured out how to get them in, but it's not really flexible.

When I get a new one, I'm bringing in a dish.
