Dishwasher recommendations???

Posted by warmfridge (My Page) on

I need a new dishwasher. Sigh. When I moved into this open-concept house 3 years ago, I had a KA DW, which was supposed to be their quietest model at the time. It cleaned the dishes well, but it was intolerably noisy. (If you care to search for ''decibels'' in this forum, you can read all about it.)

I replaced it with a Miele Optima, which was much quieter, but which does not clean the dishes. After multiple phone calls to Miele and 2 service visits (search for ''Miele dishwashers'' if you want to find that tale of woe), it still doesn't clean the dishes but etches them quite thoroughly. I can't safely use it anymore for dishes, just pots & pans. The paper plate deal has gotten really old.

I'm trying to find out if Miele will honor their 90-day performance guarantee or not. Either way, I need a new dishwasher. It has to actually CLEAN the dishes (radical concept there), be QUIET, not ETCH anything, and hold things like mixing bowls.

No more KA. Never again on the Miele. I looked at Bosch and Asko before buying the Miele, and they wouldn't hold my bowls. I know a couple of people here love their Electrolux DW's, but I've also seen a number of really bad reviews online.

Any suggestions?

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

We have a Bosch. I don't know the model off hand. It's 3.5 years old. I think it's equivalent to the current 800 series. It's amazingly quiet and it always gets everything clean. The top shelf raises and lowers to get things of different heights in the bottom or the top rack and the top rack can easily be removed for really big things. It's the only major appliance I've ever bough that I can say I have no complaints.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I can't help you :( My dishwasher amazes me every time I open it and see those dishes that were so dirty, be so incredibly clean and sparkling...and I hardly knew it was running. If there was any one talking or the kitchen tv on, me banging around in the kitchen cooking dinner...the only way I knew it was running is the indigo blue lights shining out from under the counter. There must be little elves in there (very quietly) scrubbing my plates (LOL) The cutlery rack is used for silverware. Love how nothing nests. It's all separated and clean AND for the little bit more effort it takes to place them, it's a whole lot faster to unload them. LOTS and LOTS of configurations. Middle rack raises or lowers, cutlery rack can be completely removed, silverware basket is GONE which allows for even more lager items in the bottom rack. Fits everything I want to put in there. Bosch did not. Without a doubt my most favorite appliance choice. Sorry you had such a bad experience with KitchenAid :(

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Warmfridge, I went back and looked for the thread where you describe your problems and could not find it. I did find the one that mentioned that your 50-mile-away "dealer" had nothing but broken hinges and no sample paneled machines in stock.

A couple of things I would ask. First of all, how big are these mixing bowls of yours? Any chance that they are somehow blocking an arm?

As for the etching, my understanding is that etching is caused by undisolved particulates in the dishwashing detergent. They do not go into solution because the water is hard or too much detergent is used.

But they are two separate problems. Food not being removed sounds like either, too low of a washing temp, too low of a spray pressure, inability to adequately drain the machine, a failed turbidity sensor, a failed or marginal pump, or a blocked water passage on either the intake or the pump exhaust.

But the thing is, I do not trust the Miele dealer you are dealing with. Anyone who would leave crap out on their display floor and be unwilling to answer a simple question about opening and closing the door is not to be trusted around an expensive appliance.

In any case, I have a pretty big mixing bowl myself and it fits like cake into my Bosch. Did you adjust the top rack when you did your tests?

Best of luck and sorry about the trouble you have been having.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Sorry you are having problems...
I have a Miele laperla and it cleans better than anything I've had in the past...something sounds fishy with your setup and the miele unless it was a lemon...you don't hear about many problems with them.
Anyway, bad luck and I wish you all the best.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Mojavean,

We have been around and around and around with all of the issues you raised (and many others). I have talked with at least a dozen Miele tech support people and had 2 service visits. None of them can agree on the problem(s) or how to fix it. The dealer has only been involved since the purchase to call Miele service on my behalf when I couldn't get anywhere with them. Therefore, after 2 1/2 months of a non-functioning DW, I'm throwing in the towel and it's time for a new one.

Still looking for alternative suggestions...

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Warmfridge,
I responded to the other thread asking for some information about what detergent you are using, do you rinse the dishes or just scrape? Also, can you take a picture of the load before and after a wash cycle?

Thanks!

 o
NEW Dishwasher recommendations???

Dear Fellow GW's,

I've spend 2 1/2 months trying to resolve the problems associated with this DW. I've already posted lengthy descriptions of all the problems, and I'm tired of beating this dead horse.

I'm asking for recommendations on a NEW dishwasher at this point.

Thank you for your help.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Ah, so the "certified installers" are not infallible then?

Look, you have a high set of demands going on here. Super quiet and super cleaning. It sounds to me like you need a Miele.

Barring that, check out Bosch again, but put the top rack in a spot where your mixing bowls will fit. And if THAT won't work then take the GD top tray completely out of the machine and put the spray head on the top rack feed port. (Yes, it comes with the Bosch dishwashers).

I can wash my 8 gallon brew pots in my Bosch with the top rack out. If your mixing bowl is bigger than my brewpot I will send you a free Milky Way and a six pack.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Perhaps a dw that doesn't do any sensing with the water or make it soft like the miele's or some bosch's do.

Hard to recommend one as you already tried KA and that doesn't work, the opposite end of the spectrum is Miele and that doesn't work...Bosch doesn't fit your needs because of the bowl design...

I'm afraid you don't have much left. You should try one of the Korean brands. Not a fan of them myself but perhaps they will work out for you better.
However, you might have the same problem as before with the Miele...I would force them to change it out to another one and if that doesn't work then it's something to do with your plumbing or your water that affects the Miele but not the KA and then you can try to find a KA model or another brand that is similar in design but quieter.

I know the NA and Korean models have a different design to the Euro models.

LIP2000

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Warmfridge, I really do not know what to recommend. Bosch, Asko, Meile are the most recommended and top performing brands around. The KA is made by Whirlpool, which also makes about 100 other brands of DW's(some Kenmores, Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, etc). Blomberg makes some DW's, but dealers and servicing is still in its infancy. The Korean brands (LG, Samsung) seem to mimic the European designs and seem to have spotty reviews. I know Dacor makes a few DW's, but they had major issues with leaking. Viking makes a DW too, but I have not heard much about them. The only one left is Fisher Paykel and their dish drawers, but if your bowls do not fit in a Bosch, I doubt they will fit in a dish drawer.

At this point, I would be talking to Miele about a replacement, since they can not seem to get your current one working. That and Miele DW's seem to have the fewest complaints of any DW here. I think you got one that may have been damaged during shipping and/or poor installation.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Warmfridge, You might wish to consider GE Profile. I recently traded in my 7 yr old top of the line Bosch for the Profile. It has a much better rack system than the Bosch, including "large bowl" movable tines. It isn't quite as quiet as the Bosch, even though the Bosch was rated at 46 decibels and the Profile at 47 decibels. It cleans much better than the Bosch and has a much sturdier feel. Can't report on reliability as I've only had it for about 2 weeks but I have had no problems into a year with my Profile double oven range, FL washer/dryer and fridge.

Here is a link that might be useful: GE Profile Dishwasher PDWT580RSS

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

This is not something suggested as a fix for Your Miele, I read you loud and clear --You've had enough suggestions for that> I mention this to protect your new dishwasher and "Maybe" yea "Maybe"--cause I know nothing about your water, do you have hard water? That could keep your dishes from coming clean (even with a new one) and could cause etching too. We live in S Calif and hard water "Totaled my 5 year old KA, it looked like snow inside course when I cleaned out the snow it got into the pump and bye bye KA.
My tenants recently called me and said their dishwasher, only about 3 years old, A whilrpool started smoking.
The hard water had encrusted the heating element and caused it to smoke, My tenant who is a builder and quite a handyman, removed the scum/show from the heater and that fixed it ---whewww or is is Phewwww????Anyway I didnt have to buy them a new dishwasher. But I did pay for to have a water softener put in there (Rayne) as I have done to my own home, and my present Optima is bright and clean inside and still works well after 3 years.
I hope this posts helps out, anyway good luck on your hunt for a new one---We can't have "Missippi Roses" with dishpan hands, Can We¿

Gary

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Wolf and Lip, I have been unsure about the reliability of the Korean brands and some of the others you mentioned. There are many negative reviews out there about a lot of models. That's why I'm soliciting recommendations.

Gini, I will definitely look at that GE Profile DW. I've also been looking at the GE Profile induction range.

Gary, I don't have hard water. The Miele salt dispenser is supposed to adjust for that anyway. Miele techs can't agree on whether the salt dispenser should be disabled entirely (they haven't agreed on anything else either).

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

OK warmfridge, as ya probably noticed, my CRS or CRO (can't remember OP) "Kicked in" . Sorry bout "transporting you to Mississippi"
Glad your water is not "Solid State" like ours is here, our water is sooooo bad (chunk style) that even with the built in water softener in the Miele, I suspectin a few years it would have met the same demise the KA Did.
Sorry I can help you with the DW, I buy inexpensive ones for my rentals, and they do pretty good, cept for the problem I noted.

Gary

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

My only suggestion is: hire a maid.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I wonder if the miele just is not working good with soft water...I have hard water (8 grains/gallon) that I measured...many detergents have salt added (Miele detergents have salt in them to soften the water)...if the water is just too soft I'm wondering if this could be a problem...
I know in the laperla(new version) you have to tell it what hardness your water is and you can set this to 0 which basically turns off any softening of the water I guess

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

LOL @ weedmeister...I wish!

Lip, the Optima also has a water hardness setting, which has been set correctly.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Have you looked at the Paykel/Fischer drawers? Lots of complaints but you are running out of options if you can't wait for Miele to fix it.
You Americans seem to have lousy support from Miele...up here in Canada they are pretty awesome...

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I looked at drawers before I bought the Miele. I decided that pulling the bottom drawer out wouldn't be a beneficial thing for my back injury/disability, and they didn't look like they would hold bowls very readily.

And I've already been waiting for 2 months for Miele, and it's become painfully clear that they can't fix this beast. With each visit, my dishes have gone from dirty, to dirtier, to dirty and etched, to irrevocably damaged. I finally realized a few days ago that if I waited any longer, 2 things were going to happen...the 90-day guarantee was going to expire, and I wouldn't have any dishes left. I looked at some dish sets today and nearly fell over when I saw the prices.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

See if you can get Miele to pay for the dishes as well...
still sad to hear Miele let you down so bad...

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I would give KA another try - many of us on this forum have KA's that are extremely quiet - either your old one was improperly installed or else you have a low threshhold for noise.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I keep thinking about another KA. The one I had did a good job on the dishes. I wondered if the noise issue was just me, so I actually checked with a sound meter...decibels were upper 60's to mid-70's. There's a whole thread here about my little test, including the difficulties in interpreting this number, given that there's no industry standard for measuring noise (no defined distance from the DW, no spec as to the cycle used when measuring, etc). However, the noise was bad enough so that you couldn't have a conversation, talk on the phone, or listen to the television when the DW was running. (Open concept homes are insane, but that's another topic.) I watched when the KA was removed because I was curious about the insulation, and there seemed to be a lot of it wrapped around the DW, and the installation (positioning) wasn't any different than the Miele.

So I don't know what to do.
Try KA again?
GE Profile? (There aren't any around here so I'll have to order one sight unseen)
Electrolux? (those bad reviews make me nervous)
Bosch? (will this be any better than the Miele, and I already know it won't hold everything I'd like)

I'm so disappointed. I really liked the Miele's silverware tray and controls, it held my stuff, and it was reasonably quiet, but it just didn't get the job done.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Want to join me on a trip to Miele's HQ in Germany to let them know what I think of their 'immer besser'?

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

lip2000,

You may have had good service from Miele Canada, but I'm in the same boat as warmfridge. Miele service here is utterly useless. Their service is totally dependent on where you live in Canada.

If anyone is thinking of writing to Miele Germany, don't bother. You will simply receive a very polite, very short PFO letter. It will arrive on very nice stationary though!

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

WarmFridge, like Monica, I LOVE my new KUDE70 KitchenAid Dishwasher(Monika has the KUDE60 since the 70 version does not come in black)due to how well it cleans the dishes and how quiet it is. I purposely chose to spend more money since I needed a quiet dishwasher due to the open family room and my home office being so close to the kitchen area. I also love the top culinery rack and many other features of the dishwasher.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Where do you live in Canada?
They are the only manufacturer to have field service techs in Canada...also their telephone support is top notch...
Don't get me wrong, I also have electrolux appliances and have been impressed (but not as much as Miele) with them...
I have samsung, panasonic stuff as well and their support is useless on all levels...
I backed out the nut on the leg on my miele washer(my fault)...called miele and they offered to not only send the part to me to send a tech to my house (for free) to take care of it as they were worried I was doing something wrong...wow...

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I'm weighing in to say I LOVE my new KA KUDE60. You want quiet, this baby is QUIET. You can occasionally hear some gurgling, but we have an open concept home too and it is SUPER quiet. I love the top cutlery rack. Everything's so organized, I swear my clean forks walk themselves over to the the silverware drawer. ;-) Cleans like a dream. We have softened water and I use about a tsp. of deterg. in the open side of the dispenser and about 2 tsp. in the "opens during the cycle" side of the dispenser. If you have soft water and over use deterg any DW will etch. IMHO there is a big difference from bottom to top in the KA line. The KUDE70 is the top...I believe the KUDE60 I have is nearly the same except the 60 won't take panels. All DWs have their detractors but I've seen a number of folks on this forum who love their KUDE60's & 70's. I'd give KA another look.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

bevbran, do you close the sink strainer (the left side of my sink is the one that drains)? Not sure if the gurgling you're talking about is drainage but if it is, closing the strainer will all but eliminate the noise. Course this has nothing to do with the dw. TOTALLY in love with my KUDE60 :)
I've had mine since July and I still enjoy putting away the dishes, a job I used to dread :) The cutlery rack has everything so organized that it takes no time at all to unload the silverware. One of the best things I ever did was get rid of my stoneware dishes and by Corelle. It's so light weight and slim that I can pick up 3 at a time out of the dw. It's just a joy to have an appliance that I'm so happy with! Wish I could say the same about all of them.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I'm in Saskatchewan. No factory techs here.

I've used the Miele 1-800 number many times and have found it to be slightly better then useless. *IF* you're willing to wait the 20 to 45+ minutes on hold to talk to anyone.

I'm not saying you haven't had good service from Miele, but I'm just saying that Miele service in "Canada" isn't what you describe. The people at Miele who I've talked suggest that if you live in Vancouver or GTA, you're in luck. Otherwise service is spotty at best.

I've had many problems with my washer and dryer and the best Miele can come up with is e-mailing me the factory service manaul pages that relate to the problem and suggest I fix it myself. Where I live, Miele DOES NOT HAVE A WORKING WARRANTY.

I really can't describe how poorly Miele treated me as a customer until I wrote a letter to Miele Germany, Miele Canada, and my retailer. All of my problems, including a DOA dryer, were completely blown off by Miele phone support.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I have a Kenmore Elite top of theline. I'm delighted with both its cleaning and quiet. 46DB, and our sitting area is about 5 feet away from it. It can't be heard.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Monicakm, thanks for the tip on closing the left strainer. I'll try that! Generally, I have to put my ear to it to hear if it's actually running. :-) I agonized about the DW purchase, bought a lower-line KA that leaked all over my wood floor on its first cycle through. (Damage in shipping had split the pump.) Didn't love the look of it, so I took the opportunity to upgrade. Then I picked out and paid for a Miele until I discovered that my install was going to require electrical work for the Miele, putting me way over my budget. So I cancelled that, back to KA and upgraded to the KUDE60, and have loved every day of running it. I still have my stoneware, but I bet your Corelle fits really slick! :-)

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Sorry that you have no service in Saskatchewan...I can understand they would not have local Miele employees there because the province is too small to justify it...this is where problems usually start because they have to rely on local repair people, like every other manufacturer.
I can only say that *every* time I called Miele I had someone on the phone in less than 5 minutes...everyone I know who has a Miele(granted, not a lot of people) have also had the same great experience but again, Im speaking of Ontario(phone should be the same anywhere).
Even the Miele delivery guys who dropped off my washer and dryer actually installed the dryer vent, did the levelling(initial) and went through all the programs...Yours is one of the first complaints Ive heard of Miele giving bad service...service is really what pays their bills so if they are not doing that right, they are in trouble.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

One of my main problems is that Miele touts an "all Miele delivery+install+service" service model, but doesn't deliver outside of the major centres.

When the Miele rep was here he said that they are in the final stages of a total business philosophy rework and that there have been some serious bumps in the transition. Hence the poor service I received and the spotty service that I read about here and on other appliance related boards. In my case, Miele can only get better from here!

As a quick example of what I've gone through, you mentioned the Miele delivery guys, here's an excerpt of my letter to Miele regarding their delivery guys:

We are also told to expect a call from the delivery company on Friday morning with a 3-hour delivery window. Lovely!

On Thursday July 30th the delivery company leaves a message on our machine stating that our washer and dryer are scheduled for delivery the next day and that we will receive a call Friday morning with a 3-hour delivery window.

Friday July 31st promises to be an interesting day. Laundry is knee-deep from 2 weeks of not having a working washer and dryer. I wake up early and put on my last clean pair of socks. If our machines don’t show up today, I will be sockless tomorrow.

Up before 7AM and things are already beginning to go wrong! The stacking kit that Purolator was to deliver on Wednesday or Thursday is still not here.

By 10AM we haven’t received a call with our "3-hour delivery window" for the washer and dryer. I call Miele to inquire about the delivery of ANY of our items today. Up to now Miele service has been somewhat "shaky" at best, but here, on this phone call, it implodes. The CSR this time is pleasant, but not very helpful. She tells me that my washer and dryer are scheduled for today, but the stacking kit will not arrive until Wednesday or Thursday of the FOLLOWING week. While on the phone, knee deep in laundry, I am also told that I cannot stack and use my washer and dryer without the stacking kit. I’m looking at a MINIMUM of 5 days without socks! During that 5+ day period I will also run out of underwear, sweaters, pants, and the shirts that I have to wear to work. I am not terribly happy at this point. I ask for the Purolator shipment tracking number so I can monitor the expected 11+ day journey the stacking kit is going to make. The CSR does not have the tracking number, but will call the warehouse, get it, and call me back. While I wait for her return call, I wonder: If the CSR doesn’t have the tracking information, how can she estimate the delivery date? Is she picking dates out of the air? Is "Wednesday or Thursday" a "standard response"? If not THIS "Wednesday or Thursday," maybe NEXT "Wednesday or Thursday." Thirty minutes later she calls back (no "attempt" here, she actually does!) with the tracking number. I am somewhat impressed; Miele has promised something and actually delivered!

Somewhere around 11AM the delivery company calls. Read carefully, it starts to get good here. You would expect this to be my 3-hour delivery window (I sure did!), but you would be wrong. No, this call was to inform me that the delivery truck was nearby. But lost. The driver was looking for some suggestions on how to find my house. Apparently Miele does not afford its delivery drivers maps. I give the driver some directions and roughly 30 minutes later the truck with our washer and dryer pulls up in front of our house. Success! Two men jump out of the truck and make quick, but sweaty, work of moving the washer first and then dryer into the basement. As soon as the dryer in downstairs, the "lead" delivery guy asks to use my washroom. No problem, upstairs – first door on the right. He urinates and promptly exits the bathroom WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS and re-joins the other delivery guy and myself downstairs. Lovely. The delivery guys offer to set up the washer and dryer for me. I tell them that Miele doesn’t expect the stacking kit to arrive for 5-6 days. They decide that they would probably not be able to wait that long. I agree and the delivery guys decide to leave the machines as-is. The lead delivery guy (non-hand washer) congratulates me on the purchase and offers to shake my hand. I decline, disgusted.

After the delivery guys leave, I punch the stacking kit’s tracking number into Purolator’s website and, lo and behold, the package is listed as "On vehicle for delivery." Interesting. Apparently Miele thinks it will take 5-6 days to drive roughly 40 city blocks from the Purolator depot to our house. I’m sure that traffic is bad in Germany, but I doubt it is that bad. Canada, with less than half the population and 28 times the total land area has far lower population density and, I suspect, fewer traffic issues. A few minutes later, the Purolator truck pulls up in front of my house and the driver drops off a large box with "Miele" in bold letters on the side. Could this be the stacking kit that will not arrive for another 5-6 days? Yes! Inside the box is another box, and inside that box is a WTV 414 stacking kit! Wow! It must be magic, it can travel through time! It is, at once, 1-2 days late AND 5-6 days early!

Just a small portion of the single worst consumer experience my fiancee and I have ever had!

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

>>>Just a small portion of the single worst consumer experience my fiancee and I have ever had!

Sorry, ghetterly, but if that's the worst experience you've ever had, you've had it pretty good. I'll agree that the communication could have been better but you had all the appliances delivered on the day promised, including the stacking kit early.

There are many people on this forum who have been expecting delivery on a given day only to discover the item is actually backordered and won't be delivered for weeks or months. Someone had the truck crash with all their appliances on the way to their house. People have received the wrong appliance or a severely damanaged appliance. So IMHO, as things go, your issue is really minor.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Line the inside of the cabinet housing the dishwasher with acoustic ceiling tile. The kitchen in my house is an open floor plan directly next to the living room. The dishwasher is in a cabinet that is part of the counter / eating bar between the kitchen and living room. You can run the dishwasher (Kitchenaid KUDE70) and the only time you know it's on is when you hear the water running into the drain.

Part of the problem with any dishwasher is that the inside of the cabinet often transmits the sound through the adjoining cabinets so you get sound transfer. In some cases, you can get some sympathetic vibration from the cabinetry or things stored in cabinets. The acoustic tile will absorb a lot of this.

Kitchenaid lists the washer as 41dBA on the "Normal" wash cycle.

I've never measured the washer when it's running, as it is so quiet as to be not noticable - but, I can do that as I have a sound pressure level meter.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Like I said, that was just a small portion of my experience.

The whole ordeal continued for months without a working pair of machines. Even now, 9 months later, the dryer doesn't work quite right. We have basically given up on Miele service and support and are trying to find a replacement set of machines.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Swines, acoustic ceiling tile is a GREAT idea!

I measured my DW's from 2 ft away near the top of the DW. My old KA was 65-76 dbs, and the Miele was 53-55 dbs. I would be interested to learn what your new KA measures.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

There's also a product called DynaMat which is often used for sound deadening on automobile panels, ventilation ducts, etc.

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

ghetterly:
Wow...you really seem upset at delivery...you would not have liked what happened to me when I ordered my kitchenaid fridge that was supposed to be delivered in a day or two...2 weeks later...dirty socks are one thing but try all your refrigeration in a mini-bar that we have downstairs...

If you have product problems, thats another story but by the amount of upset that the shipping caused you, I can imagine you stress out a little too easy.

Again, all I can offer is my experience...so far with Miele I have been more than satisfied...I was actually hounded by their customer service on the phone to make sure I did not want one of their reps to come to my house to solve a minor issue I had...

No company is perfect and Im sure Miele screw up from time to time...however, its so far so good with me...

Good luck to you!

 o
RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I narrowed it down to KA (which I had in last house and loved) and the Electrolux. I got the Electorlux and it looks great, is quiet, but I really don't like the way it has to be loaded. I could kick myself. Wish I could change it out. I could fit so many things in my Kitchenaid that I cant fit in this one. These are the things you really dont know until you start using. The glasses cant go along the outside of the top, but have to go on the second row which means you cant fit anything all along the middle except tiny bowls etc. Only cups can go along the outside of the top and we use a LOT of glasses buy not that many cups. Its a pain...plus on the bottom in my Kitchenaid, I could stack two rows of large plates if I need to and it had wide spaces on two sides where I could fit large pans or casseroles. The E cant do either. Hope this is helpful. The kind of thing I would like to have known.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

"I measured my DW's from 2 ft away near the top of the DW. My old KA was 65-76 dbs, and the Miele was 53-55 dbs. I would be interested to learn what your new KA measures."

Do you understand how a sound pressure level meter works and how to use it? There should be two scales on it an "A" scale and a "C" scale. The "A" scale is 500Hz to 10,000Hz and corresponds to the human ear's most sensitive range. The "C" scale is from 32Hz to 20,000Hz.

Appliance manufacturers generally use the "A" scale (noted as dBA on a spec sheet) as that is the most sensitive range for hearing.

You cannot actually measure the SPL of the dishwasher itself as it is not in an anechoic chamber. What you are really measuring is the difference between the ambient sound level and the sound level with the dishwasher turned on - or the amount of additional "noise" generated by the dishwasher.

I measured my KA last night and did a couple of different measurements. In the "A" mode and slow response, the ambient level was 51dB as the refridgerator was on and the washer and dryer were being used in the laundry room next to the kitchen. With the dishwasher turned on, and in the middle of its normal wash cycle, the room level changed from 51dB to 57dB - meaning the dishwasher added 6dB to the ambient sound level measured from 500Hz to 10,000Hz.

I then changed the meter to the "C" mode and fast response (slow averages over time on my meter). In the "C" mode, the ambient level with the dishwasher off was 60 dB - I think mostly attributable to the clothes dryer in the next room and the low frequency from the drum turning.

However, the interesting part was that with the dishwasher on, and the meter on "fast" to track short events, the sound level pulsed from 67 to 68dB. When watching the meter and listening to the dishwasher, the higher reading corresponded to the water hitting the door as the sprayer turned.

You'll notice that the diswasher added 1-2dB more noise when measured in the "C" mode compared to the "A" mode. This is because it was picking up the low frequency sound caused by the water hitting the inside of the washer. That is not something you're aware of because the frequency is so low.

My point in all of this, is that you have to be very careful as to which mode is used (A or C), the response setting of the meter (fast or slow) - as that can influence the final reading.

Lastly, you always need to start with an ambient reading to establish the noise floor as that affects the overall reading - and it will change depending upon time of day, other appliances being used, people in the room, etc.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I guess I should have been more detailed/specific. I used "A" mode, everything else turned off/silent, ambient level <30dB, tried both fast and slow response which didn't make much difference, ranges I gave reflected the different components of the DW noise (KA mostly motor/mechanical but did not include the food grinder, Miele mostly water noise), good correlation using 2 different sound meters.

From previous post about the KA:
"DW standing 2 feet away: 65-76db (louder closer to floor)
DW sitting on LR couch 27 ft away: 57-63 db (note there is a large intervening island)
TV from couch 12 ft away: 40's
Sound level on couch after turning up television to hear it over the DW noise: 70ish
My 2 parrots squawking at the DW: 80-90db"

Measured under identical conditions, my KA was clearly much noisier than the Miele.

Your ambient sound level is so much higher than mine that I don't think any comparison is possible. Makes one wonder under what conditions KA (or any other manufacturer) measures their DW's noise.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Just ordered a KA today after much agonizing....
Brand new Miele leaked on day one..not exactly sure why but it appears that it was either damaged in shipping or installed in a 24 1/8 opening with screws on the sides which warped the tub. Proper install would have required putting shims or building up the sides of the opening. I was not happy with the leaking, the large gap on the sides and the very small capacity so it was taken away.
Looked at EVERYTHING and narrowed it down to Bosch and KA. Must say I liked the Blomberg too but it was also pretty small. Took cookies sheets, 9X13 pans and a few bowls and plates in to see how they stacked as I am used to loading everything in. I had previously a KA and a Maytag--both lasted 10 years then each developed a leak. Bosch has a leak detection-a definite plus, fit all the pans, and had a seal which covered the gaps along the sides between the dw and cabinet. But I had concerns based on some of the comments here and with a salesman who said many are not too happy about drying capability. The KA had more room and I liked the idea of having a heat dryer.

Bottom line was reliability, loading capacity, filling in the 24" space and a china cycle. I read lots of reviews and listened to salespeople talk about their favorites. I wanted the option of a heat dry and was concerned about standing water and excess moisture left in the machine. My previous dw's had a heat dry, although I did not always use it, and plastics and dishes always were dry in the morning. I figured the noise differences between the machines was probably not all that significant.
What I learned---interior spaces vary significantly especially between Am. and Euro models. Take your pans into the store. Measure the dimensions of your space and the dishwasher width.

Great choice. Hope you like it. I think you will. Let us know after you have had it a week or so and tell us what you think.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

Well, got the Kitchen Aid KUDS30 installed and have used it a couple of times......Pros: cleans well, quiet, drys very well with heat setting, large interior. Cons: plates don't stay upright, does not dry too well without heat, was intalled flush with cabinet base-not cab doors-so harder to load top shelf because it is recessed more, lots of moisture vents and goes underneath counter and on countertop. Have never had a dw where the dishes don't stay upright so was not looking for that when I shopped. It is probably going to be an issue if my china chips.... Would I get it again-no. Would probably go with a Bosch. Too bad there is not a Miele quality dw with the large capacity of a ka.

Blomberg is still proving itself. I would not recommend spending that much on one now. I have one, 4 months old, parts take FOREVER to come from Blomberg and they are having problems with the pump. That is what Blomberg told the service man at my house. Still waiting for mine. Left a water puddle on our new floor.

Also

Something different about the Blomberg website; the links to customer care or service do not work. I wonder if things are changing for Blomberg????

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

I've had a problematic set of Fisher Paykel dish drawers for years. I haven't used them for months because they never got the dishes clean. We just replaced all our old galvanized plumbing with new copper pipes and I ran the dish drawers to see what would happen. The dishes were absolutely clean - like never before!

This is something to consider.

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

PLEAE DO NOT BUY AN LG dishwasher as there is major problems with them check the web under complaints.
I have an LG dishwasher and in less than one year it has gone threw 3 motors as they do not last.
They are a very loud machine regardless what the brick tells you.
The motor grinds and whistles like a bird so loud it is you can not hear yourself talk.
It takes 2 hours just to do a normal wash.
You can not use powder soap just gel.
It does not dry the dishes so you have to take the water off of them when finished cleaning
Replacement parts like the motor can take up to and over 2 months as the motors are back order due to problems
Please do yourself a favor and buy anything else as you will swear a lot with LG dishwasher

RE: Dishwasher recommendations???

We remodeled our kitchen about 7 years ago. Before the remodel, I had a Maytag. It got scratched so when our rental property needed a new dishwasher (it was only a few years old and we were still a long way away from finishing our kitchen) we installed our existing Maytag in the rental. I got a top of the line Kenmore. It lasted 2 1/2 years. I replaced it with a high end Maytag. After 3 years the Maytag started leaving debris on dishes. The repair guy came and couldn't find anything wrong with the machine (said there was too much soap being used, cutting back did help some). That was a year ago and the washing has progressively gotten worse. Currently I can only use the bottom rack. If I put clean dishes on the top rack, they come out dirty. It has been discouraging trying to figure out what to buy as a replacement. I looked at Bosch. The top rack measures about 2" shorter than the American brand. After reading this thread, I'm leaning towards the Kitchen Aid. Figure I will bite the bullet and buy the 5 year extended warranty...... Oh, and that Maytag we moved into the rental house is still going strong......sigh.
