Why do a built in refrigerator cost so much more than a counter depth refrigerator?
Can a counter depth refrigerator may be completely enclosed?
How about a regular depth refrigerator, can it be enclosed?
Thanks |

Second question first: No fridge can be completely enclosed. All fridges must vent the heat they remove from the interior of the fridge. Cabinet depth fridges generally have their compressors, coils, etc. at the top or the bottom, meaning they can be completely enclosed, except for some sort of grill or vent for air exchange. As to why they are more expensive, it's simple. You only find cabinet depth fridges in upscale houses, ones where the owners can afford to pay for the luxury and look of an enclosed fridge.

Looks, likes, lack of dust, dual compressors. Those are reasons for doing built in. There are also some kitchens where the coolers form the wall, so built in works better. Also, usually built-ins are top quality fridges, though there are plenty of fine freestanding. You can do just about anything, including enclosing a freestanding fridge to make it look built in (either CD or regular depth). Just make sure you have adequate air flow, someplace for the evaporator to vent, etc., and be sure that you won't get heat build up. The big problem is cleaning the works. Built-ins are meant to have you just vacuum the vent. It might be hard to get at the works of an enclosed freestanding to do similar.

Thanks for the Input. Almost all the refrigerators, normal depth, counter depth or built in have a vent in front. I guess my question is: Do the built ins have a system of ventilation that the others don't? They cost 3 or 4 thousand dollars more than freestanding refrigerator of the same brand and capacity. Surely is not just a way to keep them exclusive. Almost all the brands cost similarly (GE Monogram, Kitchenaid, sub zero, thermador, bosch etc) One more question Can somebody give me some feedfack regarding the Thermador column refrigerators, the freedom line? Specifically if they are prone to break or not?. Thank you

I think we all tend to fall into the fallacy of thinking that manufacturers arrive at the price they charge for a product by taking into account the manufacturing cost then adding a certain profit margin on top. That's not how it works at all. Think of the different "products" that Starbucks sells. A 20 oz. cup of coffee may sell for $1.95 while the different flavored, ice-blended versions of the same size may cost you $3.95. Does the ice, syrup, splash of milk, dollop of whipped cream and a trip through the blender cost Starbucks anywhere near $2.00? Nope. It may only cost them $0.35. But by offering products of different types at different price levels, they bring in customers who have different sensitivities to price. They make a lot more profit on the $3.95 drink and I'm sure they'd be happy if that's what everyone would order. But they don't want to miss making a sale to the more price sensitive consumer so they offer lower priced items which have a smaller mark-up but are still profitable. Built-in refrigerators are the half-caf mocha blended frappuccinos of the appliance world. :-) Consumers who are building kitchens that require a built-in look are less price sensitive than most other consumers and will pay the premium price to get what they want. That premium has very little to do with what actually goes into the manufacturing of the product itself. (My understanding of the above comes from reading: The Undercover Economist: Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, Why the Poor Are Poor--And Why You Can Never Buy a Decent Used Car by Tim Harford.)

Regarding the Thermador Freedom series, I have a fridge and a freezer in my kitchen. They've been installed over a year and the Thermador fridge, freezer nad DWs are the only appliances that haven't been serviced. I LOVE the fridge and freezer! I'm pleased with the DW -- I just don't think I'd ever say I "loved" one that didn't clear the dishes and also put them away. ;-)
