Making vintage/antique door handles/knobs work

Posted by kntryhuman (My Page) on

I want to purchase antique glass door knobs/handles and put them in new doors. The glass door knobs sold on eBay are the knobs and spindle but nothing else.

What do I need to make them work in a new door besides a back plate and where do I buy the parts?

You need a mortise lock set--this vendor has some decent photos.

They require a weird hole in the door, very different from a modern knob set.

There is a way to retro-fit them without using the big mortise but I'm not sure how.

You'd want a lockset like this, but you must have the knobs and their square spindle with its setscrews already, because they aren't included.
