| Hi,
I am new and am looking for help identifying this statue that I have. My Grandmother passed it on to me and all I know is she bought it about 30 - 40 years ago at an antique shop in Boston. It stands about 4 ft tall and is carved out of solid wood. The chest opens up to reveal a small cabinet. Someone told me maybe it was a wine or liquor cabinet. I cannot find any markings or anything indicating its maker or origin. Any help would be appreciated, thanks kindly in advance! |

| I am sure it's one of a kind....something someone made for some specific purpose at the time. Looks Spanish or Portugese....but you knew that. I am sure he guarded something precious...but think he;s lots older than the concept of a "liquor cabinet". Linda C |

| Thanks! I have scoured the internet looking for info and keep coming up with nothing. I've been looking for close to a year. Can anyone suggest any other place to post where I might be able to get more info? Or should I have it appraised? |

| I found a Don Quijote virtual museum, where I spotted a statue very similar to yours. Your statue came as a pair. They both appear to have chests that open up like cabinets. Looks like Spain as the origin. |

| Is the inside of it lined with cedar or possibly all made of cedar? Looks like cedar to me. Is it usual to line someting not meant for clothing storage with cedar? Cedar has a very strong odor which might permeate anything stored there. |

| Hear about the people who called their burro "Xote"? Really!! And of course the female is called Dulce. I'm not sure what info you hope to find....it's not a manufactured item...likely it was made in Toledo ( as in Spain not Ohio! LOL!) and is a one of a kind, made by an artesan likely for the tourist trade.... Why would you have it appraised? An appraisal is someone's educated guess as to what it's worth...unless you arew anting to settle an estate of schedule it on your insurance....there is no need. The co0mbined knowledge of the people posting here is greater than any appraiser you will find. The only advantage to a certified appraiser would be that they would (maybe!) know the market in your area. Linda C |

| I don't think it is made of cedar. I guess I was hoping to find out the age of the item, what it may have been used for, it's history. You are probably right that it was one of a kind and made for a specific purpose. I guess I was thinking I could have it appraised by an antique specialist who might be able to find more info on it and would have an idea of its value, but that isn't necessary. Thank you all kindly, that similar one at the Don Quixote Virtual Museum is so similar, thanks for finding that! |

| Wow, Zofie, that website is some find! Not only is the item identical, but also if you browse around a bit there are some fabulous other pieces and a wealth of information. Who knew that Cervantes was buried on the same day as William Shakespeare? (Not that I would have previously been able to call to mind who wrote Don Quixote in the first place). KarinL |
