Where did you get it?

If it were American, I would say it's Empire Revival and looks to have had a really bad stripping attack.

I agree with the bad stripping job. It does look like Biedermeier like lazygardens posted. I had an empire chest years ago that looked similar but without the spindle trim on the sides. It was left in a damp basement and the veneer came off. The drawers looked just like this chest with the odd shades of wood. The piece couldn't be salvaged.

Pear wood - makes nice furniture.

I'd definitely do a careful evaluation of the construction and condition and it would be worth paying for a professional refinishing if you aren't skilled.

Good Biedermeier pieces are very salable in the right areas, and they are usually pretty and well-scaled for modern living.
