Saving canvas paintings

I have a friend that bought some paintings on a recent trip to Africa. She doesn't say what medium they are, but just that one of them had been sitting out in the sun. She brought them home and took them to have them stretched and the one that had been in the sun, started to crack. I was wondering why the person stretching them would not know what to do, but she ask me and I'm asking y'all. She wants to know if you know of anything that she can brush or spray on the back of the canvas that will make the canvas "give" a little or make it more supple. Obviously, she is going to have cracks, but something to keep it from splitting.
I know this is not an art forum, but I know y'all seem to discuss alot of topics. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all.

The problem is the canvas is stretching but the paint is not....
Whoever stretched the canvas is an idiot!....don't stretch an already painted canvas....just carefully tack it to a stretcher.

It's repairable. Relining is what it needs. I too wonder why the person stretching them didn't know what to do-may have been a friend doing it cheaply, instead of a professional.

The canvas is brittle from the sun. I don't know of anything that could be sprayed or brushed on that would strengthen it without also sacrificing the painting.

I suggest calling the nearest art museum to request a reference to a professional conservator.
