Also, wanted opinions on the finials. Too pointy? Should I replace for a bit more modern look? I can't decide...

It's an odd mix of an 1890s spindle-back style with square legs from another era. It would usually have turned spindle legs and round stretchers too.

If you want a more modern chair, buy a more modern chair. Removing the spindles won't make it look any younger. It will just make it look like an old chair with replaced spindles.

I really like it and can't say I've ever seen one quite like it. Yes, it is 'spindle backed', but it isn't typical. Notice how the spindles have been planed flat so it is more two dimensional? It makes the legs fit it and not look like so much of a mismatch. I'd be curious to see the underside of the chair.

Is this what you would like to see? The two spindles between the legs are "flat" as well.

At a guess, I'd say these are '70s chairs in a curious blended style sometimes called "Italian Provincial" back in the day.

If you want to liven them up, don't replace the finials. Instead, paint them some nice bright color -- maybe red.

You may have something there. It doesn't strike me as being particularly old, either although the press back and faux spindles would like to suggest it. I do find it to be a pleasing look, and am not a fan of painting furniture old or not-so-old.

My first impression was 70s (1970s) as well.
