The carving style is very 1880-1910 or so ... a touch of William Morris or arts and crafts styling in the stems and flowers.

It is similar to a few "Bishop's chair" images I found ... less ornate, but very square and formal.

Unless you can find a maker's mark, you are never going to identify it beyond a general age and name.

It's hard to tell for sure on my tiny monitor, but the wood looks like oak (appropriate for the era and style), quarter-sawn on the side panels.

The seat may have originally been upholstered, rather than having a cushion.

Thank you for the replies. The wood is quarter-sawn and the finish looks original. I see pics of some chairs kind of like it but also not like it. For example, I see pics of bishop's chairs or throne chairs but they have higher backs. I see mission arm chairs but they seem to have backs that are not as straight. It is a real mystery to me on how this chair was used.

If you were me how would you upholster the seat? Leather?

Leather would be period appropriate, as would a lot of upholstery material. Something that picked up on the branch and flower pattern would be nice.
