I believe match safe. The clips on the back are where the (sandpaper) scratch pad to light the match would be.

Some long matches, then. 3.5" very tall for match safe. Just sayin.

The logo on your piece reads "everdri" and not "everdn" The script is a little overstyled, but if you look carefully, you'll see a dot over the i. It is a match safe. Kitchen matches made with real wood back in the 1940s were about 2.5 inches long. It takes an old gezzer like me to recall seeing these things.

It would have been favored by an outdoorsman who smoked a pipe or cigars, or who needed to light a fire. The safe protected matches from rain and snow. It also proteced the user from a pocket fire - ever see what happens if one manages to set off an old style brimstone match head in a pocket of matches?

These match safes went out of style with the introduction of the safety match and cigarette lighters. Kitchen matches did soldier on in the home until electric lighting replaced kerosene lamps and when the kerosene kitchen ranges were tossed out. After this, the major use for kitchen matches were for starting fires in a wood stoves and burning trash outside. Workmen who used blow-torches lamented the demise of the long kitchen match.
