Silver Tea and Coffee Set

| I have a silver set from the early 1950's. I have tried to get it appraised and I can not find anyone who will do this. Are their internet services available for this?

| Very pretty - Yes, you should be able to get an appraisal on the internet sice these are/were fairly common items and there are lots of them out there. What you'll need is the maker and if possible, pattern name, which should be on the bottom of most of the pieces. |

Depending on why you need an appraisal, you might find what you need on replacements dot com. Similar silverplated sets there are selling for about $3,000...but in reality you could buy one very similar for under $500.
If you need an appraisal for household insurance, I would say, don't bother. It would not be easy for a thief to put into a bag and steal, and unless it's sterling, it wouldn't bring much in a pawn shop.
There is a very similar set on eBay right now.

| Thanks sweeby and lindac. I really wanted it appraised because my mother asked me if it could be done. How do you know if it is sterling? It does weigh quite a bit so you are right, I don't think it could be easy to steal. I appreciate the link to ebay and the similiar set. Do you have any direct links to appraisers? Thank you again. |

What is the mark on the bottom? Based on what I see in your picture, I seriously doubt that it is sterling.
No appraiser would be willing to give you a signed appraisal without seeing the piece in person. You don't say where you live, but you perhaps could find an appraiser in the phone book? But why spend the money having something appraised just for fun?
Again, look at the markings and post a clear picture, I can give you a pretty good idea of the value.

Thanks Linda. Here is the picture:
 It is packed away right now-I am not sure if the mark on the tray is the same as the rest. I have checked our area and there is not an appraiser. My mother has always thought it was so valuable--I just wanted to comply with her wishes and let her know the approximate value. Thank you again! |

It is silverplate.
The value should she want to replace it would be about $1,000, top dollar, for a used piece of the same vintage and quality. I gave, or helped give, huge showers for our friends' children when they got married. We most often gave a silver service similar to the one you have. We bought them at various discount silver stores, like Ross Simons, Service Merchandise and one other in California. We paid around $350 for sets like you have. You can still buy a set like you have for about $350 and you can buy one for about the same price.
Getting as "appraisal" means that the appraiser gives you a document, signed, that states that in his or her opinion this item is worth so much. No one will do that for you without seeing and handling the item, or if they will they are unscrupulious.
There are 2 kinds of appraisals, one for replacement cost...if sauch an item were stolen or destroyed, and the other is for quick sale, or for estate purposes. That is the price you could expect to sell it for to a dealer, much lower than the value for insurance.
You can give your mother a very good idea of what it's worth by looking in jewelry stores to see what a Wm Rodgers coffee service with tray and kettle sells for. And you can give her an idea of what she could sell it for by looking on eBay to see what similar sets sell for.
