That's odd, I thought I posted to this thread already. I'm prety sure the "unknown desk set" item is a blotter- you roll it in one direction across newly written ink pen writing to blot up any excess ink and prevent smearing.

Oh! That makes sense, Colleen, although I've never heard of it. In fact, there is some backward-written ink on the bottom of it, so that would explain it. Thank you!
