Bob, I am not one of the experts here, but my grandparents had a chair with similar legs and arms that was at least from the early 20th c. and possibly older. I would try to open the back a little to see if it was originally a caned back.

If it were mine, I would recover it in something fun or in a wool tweed type fabric if you want to use it in your den or office. Very pretty chair.

Hope someone else chimes in for you. There are others who really know their stuff here. :)

I don't know if I dare try to open the back. I'll have to look at it and see how it's attached before I decide if I want to try it. I'll post another reply with a picture of the back, since I seem to be able to only post one image per message.

Well, the back is certainly still in excellent condition! I would be afraid to loosen that, too. I love the curve at the bottom of the seat in front as well! Didn't notice that before.

That is really a charming chair! The nice heft and taper of the arm and the line of the lower seat front lift it well above the average chair. The turned legs are throwing me off a bit -- I'm wondering if maybe it's European rather than American, and quite a bit older than it first appears.
