Inkwells were in use up to 1940 and then rapidly declined. The inkwell phase out began with the introduction of the fountain pen. The first fountain pens were messy affairs and the bladders were not reliable. As bladder material and design improved, inkwells dissappeared. Likely, the last ones in use were in bank lobbys.
