I think that this container was made from a brass shell casing during or shortly after WWI. It is about 5 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches diameter. Would appreciate any help about history, identity, value etc.

| Well, it is marked 1918. WWI ended in 1918, but it officially ended for Germany with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. "Gott Mit Uns" or "God with us" was a popular German belt buckle motto in WWI. I'd guess a shell casing too - gut reaction is basically a folk art souvenir by someone who had a little metal working skill and spent some of his army time in France. No name, initials or any identifying marks on the bottom? Impossible to say who it was made by or of made at the time or of later vintage. |

| That appears to be a nicely done piece of trench art. I can't help you with the value but you might research "trench art" for a fair idea of what the market is for the collector today. |
