Dire straits for the people in the Houston area.
It is so so bad. People on their roofs. Boats making rescues in subdivisions. People are going to die in this one. It is extremely sad watching these poor people trying to save their families. This rain needs to stop. It is already unprecedented. They keep using that term because it just is.
I am so glad to hear from Marilyn. Lucille please be careful and safe. I have not heard from Terilyn recently hope all is well. Ntt glad to hear from you too. Everyone here from the area all please keep checking in. Please be safe!
We have moved back into the rv. The house is taking on a lot of water. It could very easily get more water this time than last year. It just depends on this crazy rain. We are OK for now. I feel safe now but if it gets high enough it could come in the rv. I don't think it will do that. They are sending out buses and rescue vehicles so that is helpful for the ones that are not able to get away.
Everyone here needs thoughts, prayers, whatever you can send their way.
Please please hope and pray that our power doesn't go out!

Praying for all you in the Houston area. Thank you for the update. I am so sorry you have water in your house. I know you expected it, but it is heartbreaking. I hope others will check in too.
My niece and her SO just bought a house in Seaborn a couple of months ago. I haven't heard anything this morning. Yesterday they were ok and still had power and cell coverage. Today is like different from the footage I'm seeing.
Praying for you all.
I hate this for all of you. Fingers crossed for everyone.
(((((Hugs))))) and prayers for all of you. Raven, I'm so sad that you have to go through this again....
Been watching this unfold on the news. What a horrible disaster. Everyone take care!
Raven, my heart goes out to you. After what you went through last year, this just isn't fair. God bless and keep our KT family safe.
Thanks for checking in Raven, and I hope all of our other Texans will do the same if they are able. I am so very sorry that you are going through this again. Stay safe in your RV. My prayers are with you.
So very sorry this is happening ! Sending prayers the rain will STOP! Everyone, please be safe!
We are praying that it does not get so high that we are not safe in the rv. This is truly terrifying. We are seeing areas nearby that water is chest deep. One elderly woman in her nightgown carried her dog in water over her waist. It was so sad. She was barely standing.
Are you able to drive the RV away to another, less affected town?
No the roads are flooded. They were not expecting what happened last night. They thought we were going to get about 30 inches for the whole event but we got 25 last night alone. And it's not moving out. It was forecasted to move north of us and west of us. That's not what happened. It cut straight down into the Houston area and it is stalled.
We got 10 inches in 3 hours!
Nothing can handle that.
Oh Raven, I'm almost crying for you; I keep checking gw hoping, hoping it won't be as bad as everyone has feared, but I guess that's not to be. Please will you consider driving your rv further north? Dallas?
(Edited) I guess we were typing at the same time. Do you have any relatives you can go to if someone in a boat can get to you?
Thinking of everyone down there as the news has been unfolding. So horrific!! I just can't fathom what everyone down there is going through. Sending prayers for a safe outcome and that this passes quicker than forecasted. Appreciate the updates, Raven.
So far, our neighborhood is high and dry. The tornados all around the past two days have been the scary part.
We're watching tv. DH says he thinks they are going to have to mobilize the national guard. The local law enforcement agencies say to stay off the roads. The local waterways are close to out of their banks. I'm not sure if we could make it to the closest interstate if we wanted to go. Once you make the decision not to evacuate, you are committed to the local area because the rivers and bayous are out of their banks in every direction.
Still praying for all the ones who are in trouble with this disastrous weather.
So horrible. Please keep sending updates. Hugs
Oh raven, so good to hear that you are safe, but so very difficult to hear that your house is again being flooded and there is predicted more to come. You and all in the path of this devastation are in my thoughts and prayers.
Oh Raven! Your beautiful house! I'm so sorry your going through this again....so...so...sorry....
My DH says remember "Camille"? 175mph winds....fingers crossed it doesn't turn into this.....
Oh not again! Oh raven I am so sorry for what you and all your neighbours are going through yet again.
I have been praying about this situation ever since it started. I pray that all are safe and that this ends quickly.
It's like Katrina again :( it must have been a hard decision not to evacuate and unfortunately some will pay with their lives. I am sad for the animals too. What a heartbreaking situation. I hope it stops soon.
I'm really sorry you're going through this again.
Raven, I followed your story last year as you re-built and to read that the house has flooded again is just so sad. I'm very sorry, but am glad that you are safe and dry in the RV.
Like so many others who are thinking of you, I am hoping that the rain lets up, the waters start to recede and that you continue to stay safe in your RV. Thank you for the updates even though the news isn't what so many of us wished for you.
Stay safe....
Raven, like Dawn (above) I have followed your story of rebuilding last year and am so worried about you and your hubby. Since the Weather Channel is keeping us alert to what is happening around your area, would you be able to safely tell us your location? I gather you are in Harris County, ....near a bayou? Near any identifying highways? You're on a Creek....which one? I keep hearing about tornadoes popping up and don't know how far you are from the alerts. ~ From the looks of things, you would risk your life to try to drive away in the RV....all roads are too big a risk. ~ You've done everything you can....now, just join all the rest of us in prayer.....for your safety, for a bit of a let-up so things might recede before the next downpour, for electricity to stay on. Thanks so much for keeping us posted......we worry about you.
This is the gauge Raven posted the other day, I think it is the creek/bayou by her.
https://www.harriscountyfws.org/GageDetail/Index/1140
Raven, you are in the middle of this natural disaster and you are still concerned about everyone around you. You are truly a blessing to everyone.
My SIL reported in about my niece. They are ok. The water got up to about waist deep in their street but in between rain stops it would drain. Their house sits a little higher than they thought so they are dry for now. They do have a leak around their fireplace chimney but that is the least of their worries for now.
We've been watching Fox News as well as other channels today. The locals are saying the old 'turn around, don't drown' doesn't apply because all the roads are flooded. Raven, I hope it doesn't get any worse than it already is for you all. America's 4th largest city is in dire need ot our prayers and as much help as can be offered now and later.
Raven, I don't even know what to say my heart is in my throat.
Mother nature can be very cruel. I have been watching some of the news coverage..such sadness and truely terrifing for so many people. Little Mia must be scared bless her heart but she knows mommy will protect her well.
You and your family along with all the people affected by this are in my prayers.
I keep checking this site on Facebook. There are many people calling out for help. https://www.facebook.com/safetycheck/hurricane-harvey-aug24-2017/home/
So very sorry and worried for you and all the people and animals in harm's way. I am donating to the red cross to help in the relief efforts. Praying for you!
I have been praying for you, and Houston, since I heard about the hurricane. I am so sorry to hear you are flooded again. Prayers will continue.
((((((Raven)))))))
Keeping all you proud Texans in my thoughts and prayers. Please try to keep us updated. Adellabedella, the happiest sight we've ever seen was the National Guard rolling in on the heels of the Red Cross. People can say whatever they want about the Red Cross but you get a whole new perspective when they come in feed, clothe, and shelter you!
My thoughts and hopes are with you and all of you down in South Texas.
Be safe and be brave. Praying for a good outcome.
It's been quite awhile since Raven checked in; hoping it's only because she's lost power.
I don't even know where to start. I I experienced something today I never thought I go through. We were evacuated by canoe! Water was chest deep. I thought surely I was going to die. The most wonderful people came to our house and saved us. Mia too. Our Rv was taking on water and the water was so deep it was starting to float. My vehicle was under water when we left. My husband has a big truck but it is probably under water too. They were continuing to tell us to stay in place. But they were doing nothing to try and help us. I got on the next door forum for my neighborhood and asked for help. Within minutes we had wonderful people who were coming for us. I had to leave my wheelchairs it was a very difficult time for me. But thank God we did it. One of our wonderful neighbors that's in an area that doesn't flood told us to come stay with her. She is having her 95 birthday Sept 1st. We are here with her. She has Mia cuddled up in her lap.
We have absolutely lost everything. Likely both vehicles. Very likely the Rv, definitely everything in the house. Our furniture was floating. It was waist deep in the house when we left. Outside was chest deep on me.
I am so thankful that we are alive. I am so thankful for the wonderful people who put themselves at risk to come save us. And I am especially thankful for the wonderful lady that has taken us in her home.
I only have my husband's phone. My got wet. I didn't try to get out with tablets or laptops. So I probably won't be around too much.
Everyone here is in need of so much.
I have no idea what is going to happen. I have no idea what our future is.
Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.
It's not what anyone wanted to hear, but I'm glad you are safe. Get some rest. I know you need it.
Raven, I am sick with grief for you and so grateful you and Mr. Raven are safe. Mia too. I am holding you in my heart, as is everyone here I know. Stay strong. Rest. I don't know how just yet, but everything will have a way of working out. You will turn a page, have the love of your life at your side and move forward. I know you can do this. I send you my love.
Oh raven, I am so sorry. I'm very glad everyone made it out alive and well, but I am so sorry about all that was lost.
Oh Raven, I am sooooooo extremely sorry that you have lost everything, but so very, very thankful that you, Mr. Raven and Mia are alive and have a place to stay. WHAT can we do to help you?
Buy me a winning lottery ticket lol!
Seriously send prayer and thoughts for all of us. I don't even begin to know what to say.
Raven, I am so sorry to read your latest post. I wish I could give you a big hug. TG you're all safe! Try to rest and stay as calm as possible. Your neighbor lady is a hero for taking you in. Post when you can.
Rosie
Raven, I'm at a loss for words reading all that you have been through in the last 24 hours. I am so very, very sorry that after all that happened last year, you've had to deal with it again on a much larger scale. This really brings home to me how truly devastating this is for the people of Texas.
I am very glad that you and Mia and your husband have been rescued and are safe. And, thank goodness for wonderful neighbors and friends who are pulling together to help each other out.
Please let us know how you are doing when you can.
Glad you are all safe! That's what matters.
Just now catching up with the KT. I am so sorry for your devastating flood losses. Keeping you and yours in my prayers.
Thank goodness you were able to get help and are safe. The news says the rain won't stop till Thur. Praying for all of the people in harms way.
Raven, I am so very sorry. The pictures on tonight's news and the stories are heartbreaking. So sad. Prayers for all in the area.
Will be thinking of you.
My heart aches for you, DH and Mia. I can't even imagine losing everything, much less going through it for the second time. Bless your neighbor for taking you in. While there is so much evil in the world, we can never forget all the wonderful people there are. When times are the darkest, some kind soul reaches out to us. God sent us angels to get us through the tough times. I'm so grateful you are safe, and that Mia is with you. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Saying "I'm sorry" just doesn't seem like enough, but I am. My heart goes out to you and everyone else in such terrible straits. I really wish I could do something to help. I will donate money to the Red Cross right now, but I just wish there was there was more I could do. Please take care.
I have followed your story after the last flood and recovery. Like all of the others here, so happy to hear you and all family are safe. Feel great sorrow that this terrible disaster has caused so much damage. Please know strangers are praying for you.
Raven, if I were to win the lottery, I sure would help you but for now you have my love and prayers. I hope somebody can get a wheelchair for you, as I know you need it. If I were close, I'd give you mine, although mine is not electric. I'm praying that your RV can be salvaged and repaired so you can at least live in it. God is with you, keep the faith. I'm thankful for that dear lady who took you all in.
Oh, Raven, I'm so very sorry. Shouldn't happen to anyone ever.
(((((Hugs))))). You, DH and Mia are safe! Right now that is all that matters.
My heart is breawking for those going thru this horrific event. Raven, God bless you and may he give you the strength to endure. Thank God and good people that you are safe. What an ordeal. I've been worrying about Marilyn. I noticed from a previous post that someone has heard from her. I personally haven't seen anything from her.
Oh no Raven I am so sorry, but I am glad you are safe now from this horrible flooding and have a place to stay. How heartbreaking that you have had to suffer twice with flooding this past year and lost so much. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I don't even know what to say other than I will continue to keep you, your DH, Mia and everyone else in my prayers. I'm so sorry but glad to know you are safe and dry.
I am also at a loss for words. I cringe to open the the thread, afraid of what has happened. Surely your safety and well-being is of the utmost importance, but I can't imagine having the fortitude to deal with this, again. Good thoughts going out to you. At least for a few days, you're in a safe place with your neighbor. Bless all the people who endanger themselves to help. I just cannot imagine.
I am at a loss for words too. Such a devastating time for you Raven but glad you are safe. So sorry.
Raven....there are just no words....just prayers now❤️
Dear God Almighty, Raven.....
I have been thinking about you and am glad that you are safe. An hour ago I turned on the tv and saw that the National Weather Service is predicting 40 to 50 more inches of rain for the Houston area. Hard to imagine.
I feel absolutely sick for you, Raven. I was getting worried when you didn't post for so long and we all thank you for letting us know you're alive, if not well. You've had a terrible, terrible shock and I am glad to know you have a safe place to stay for the time being. Be very gentle with yourselves and don't even try to process what has happened--there will be time enough for that. You will continue to have my prayers.
I'm so sorry. I can't imagine what that was like to go thru. Not once, but twice. I sure hope you can somehow get a wheelchair. At least we know you're safe. I just heardvon the news that TX is going to release water in reservoirs so they don't burst. omg! Further flooding aside from the rain with water releasing.
I don't post often, but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband, Raven. My thoughts and prayers for all the people who are affected by this terrible and tragic hurricane.
Glad you got to safety. Sending prayers to everyone in Texas that is going through this devastation.
I am glad to read you are OK, as I have worried all day about you and your little family in the RV. That didn't sound safe to me as I just had a feeling in my bones that things weren't going to go well. I am so sorry.
I am so sorry you are going through this again. This hurricane is such a huge tragedy for so many. As others said, "there are no words". Most things can be replaced, lives can't, so glad you are safe.
So sorry, Raven. Glad you are safe now. As this plays out, please let your GW family if there is anything we can do to lessen the load.
Raven, I'm so thankful that you, Mr, Raven and Mia are safe! I will continue to keep you in my prayers. I hope you will be able to keep in touch with us. We are concerned about you and the others in that area.
One of dh's friends lives below the two dams that are going to release water at 2 am. We weren't able to get them to our house like we wanted. They waited too late to leave. They did find a hotel with a top floor in a better location and will stay there for two weeks.
Sending love to you Raven. So glad to hear you and your DH and Mia are safe and in a good place right now. Words just are inadequate.
Thank goodness you were able to get to safety. For now, you are in a snug house with your loved ones and good friend. One day at a time.
I've been thinking of and praying for you Raven. So glad you're safe. So so very sorry you are all going through this...thank God for kind neighbors.
I'm so very, very sorry. My eyes were filling with tears just reading this.
Weeping. Can't find the words.
We are so sorry for you Raven. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of southeast Texas.
Raven, I've been checking in regularly for updates on your situation. I'm worried about all KTer's and everyone in the area. However, having been through last years flooding with you and watch the remodel take place, all the little details, I feel a special connection with you and have been sharing your story with my family. All day long, watching what has been happening, I didn't see how you could possibly escape flooding again. Still, I was so hoping for some kind of miracle. I'm so glad you're on safe ground right now but still devastated by all you've been through and the long road ahead for you and all the others.
Raven, not again! This is just so terrible, but at least you and hubby and Mia are safe. That's more important than anything.
Oh ((((Raven)))) my heart aches for for you. I was here when you journeyed back from the last flood. It seems so wrong that this happened again! Tears run and I'm a mess. My heartfelt prayers and best thoughts for you and all people and animals affected. This is just too much! I'm so sorry this ever happened to you! And I'm with others in being ever so grateful and thankful for the goodness of your neighbours in bringing you to safety!
I've been away for a few days, so just catching up with online stories. So glad to hear you are safe. Heartbreaking about your house and other stuff. But the most important are people and their pets & animals. Stay safe.
I'm glad you and your husband and Mia are safe, but I'm so sorry about all your losses. It's just not fair. We all are thinking about you here on KT.
Wow! There are no words .....
I'm reminded of the Kipling poem..
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
and stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools....
Sending you thoughts of strength, courage, comfort, and a touch of anger as that will help you muster the power you will need to rebuild again.
I'm so terribly sorry, and yet grateful that there are good people who were able to help you be safe...grateful for all the good people who pull together in a time of need.
Please stay safe.
I am glad that you are safe, but am sick in my heart that you have to deal with all of this again. All I can do is sending good thoughts and prayers and keep my candle lit but it don't seem to help. A friend moved to your area last year because they did not like to live in tornado alley, we have not heard from them since Saturday.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I have been talking to my son off/on about it all weekend, and was saddest to report to him this morning. I wish I could do something for you. I am here for you. Be safe and strong. Much caring coming your way.
Just wanted to update. My next door neighbor and best friend was just rescued this morning at dawn from their second story roof! Water was reaching them in the second story. I was frantically trying to get a rescue boat to them since midnight when she called me for help in tears. My heart is breaking. We have elderly neighbors still trapped in second story houses and we are trying to get them rescued. My house is probably nearly to the ceiling with water. They said our vehicles were not even visible. So the Rv too properly is quite full of water. Every thing important I left on the highest level in the Rv. We could not take anything in the canoe but our medicine and Mia basically.
I don't know how this is going to end but I can't see it being anything other than deadly. They have said on the news they are going to release water from the reservoirs and dams which will vary likely cause much deeper water. There is no place for the water to go.
Please continue to keep everyone in your prayers and thoughts. We are all devastated. But we are dry and safe for now.
(((Raven)))
Oh no! I have been out of town. I had no idea it was so bad. I don't know what to say, except I am so sorry and I am so glad y'all and Mia are safe. I hope everyone gets out safe.
I seldom post, but have followed you since the last flood & rebuilding...so very sorry...sending prayers!
(((Raven, Mr. Raven and Mia)))
You're in my prayers. Glad you're safe. I can't even imagine what you must be feeling. Stay strong.
Thank you Raven for all that you are doing to help others. This is what I experience every time I go to Texas, people are good. Texas and her people don't deserve this. I am very sad too.
I'm glad you're safe I'm so sorry for everything you'll have coming at you in the next days/weeks/months. It's exhausting and overwhelming to even think about. Best wishes
Raven, I feel so emotional after reading about your situation. I'm glad you and your family are safe and sound. Rebuilding over again although possible, it's still very tough. So please rest as much as possible while you can. Once the bad weather goes away, water drains off, there are much to do ahead. Please take good care.
Dear Raven, my prayers are with you.
I don't know what to say except that I am truly sorry that you have to go through this again. Once in a lifetime was enough.
Raven, I dont post here often, but, have followed you through all the last flooding and now through this one. My very best to you and your husband and little dog. It is so sad, to lose everything once again, and this time, more than what was gone the first time. Best wishes to you and your family.
I am so relieved to read that you are safe and dry.
I wish you had been spared this flood...and the last one! I'm grateful to you for showing us the immediate despair -- and tedious hardship of trying to reclaim your home. I can't comprehend your losses multiplied by the thousands of people flooded out of their homes, facing tomorrow with the clothes on their backs.
"Sorry" is so little against so much hurt.
I am so sorry, was in tears reading about your rescue. Glad you are safe, so sorry you have lost so much. Prayers for you & Texas.
Oh, raven, what a horrible situation. I'm so sorry for you and for everyone out there.
"Sorry" is so little against so much hurt.
So very, very true.
My prayers are flying down for everyone. Please stay safe and hopefully this will be the last time this happens to anyone. One day we may all be living like eagles, high up in a tree where the water can't reach. Or maybe like the jetsons. LOL
Raven, this truly breaks my heart. Words cannot express how sad I am for you. Almost everyone I know has flooded. Several will lose their houses.
(((((Raven)))))) Words can't express the feeling we all have for you and all who are suffering.
((((raven and family)))) If the pictures on tv and the internet are any indication the devastation is beyond description.
I'm glad you're safe and so sorry you're going through this - again.
I know you'll try to stay in touch.
just cannot comprehend this disaster....altho,it does no good for all of you suffering,I can't help but cry reading about your situation.......so so sorry that you are enduring this again.....
I am speechless for you (and the others) who are going through such an ordeal. I'm happy you are safe and dry, and I hope Harvey defies the forecasts and begins to move on.
So glad to hear that you are all safe and hope you remain that way. Just heard from a friend of mine who moved to Houston that she is okay so far, too. She said it is still raining. I am going to pray for the safety of everyone in the flooding areas and also pray for the rain to stop.
Good to hear from you. Please be cautious.
I'm so sorry, Raven. I am grateful you and your husband and your dog are safe, and I'm sending warm hugs and drying thoughts that this beast of a storm moves on, and dissipates. And that all of the rest of the GW family in the area is safe. When you need help beyond just being dry, do ask.
This is a video I found from around the area we were. To give an idea. This was before the water got deep. Vehicles were still able to get through. Now it's boats only. Water is now over the roofs of the houses you see here.
https://youtu.be/3UehGljtkSw
Got on here today just to check to see if you were ok... so sorry for all of this once again for you. But thankful you were rescued and have a dry, safe place to stay. All of the water is just incomprehensible.
Raven, I'm crying all over again. I am right there with you. Floods are the worst. I'd like to pound that doggone water back into the rivers and oceans. Go away!
Hello Raven.....thought I had better check to see if you are ok. So sorry!! What a terrible thing. I will be praying for you and your city! Hugs to you!
Dear Raven (family), I have been worried for you and am so relieved that you are safe. Thank goodness for those brave rescuers and the kind friends who are opening their home to you. The sustained rains and flooding are unimaginable. It is particularly heartbreaking to see so many in harms way and suffering. I'm glad that you are helping your neighbors get rescued. My condolences and best hopes for all of you in harms way.
https://youtu.be/QZqZ5ruVCT0
Just an example of what kind of water we are dealing with. Biblical proportions.
Obviously words fail me. I am so sorry, Raven. I am grateful you and your family are safe. I pray for your continued safety and for your emotional strength. May you find comfort.
Raven, were your friends and neighbors able to get out?
Yes we got a boat there at dawn they rescued them from the roof by boat. This is how high the water is, they have a second story house, they were on the roof with 2 black labs, the boat came in and they had a one foot step into the boat from the roof. They didn't even get wet!
We on the other hand looked like drowned rats! Wet from head to toe lol.
Long time lurker on KT but had to comment on this. I'm in tears reading your posts Raven. Sending prayers and ❤️ to you and all those impacted by this.
((hugs))
Raven I am so thankful that your neighbors and the black labs were rescued. What I don't understand is people being told to get up on the roof...HOW are they supposed to do that? With us being elderly and handicapped, even if there was a ladder, we could never do that.
That is what I've thought about Linda. I'm afraid they will people who were trapped in their homes after the water recedes. It's frightening, and I hope everything will be okay soon.
Me too! I've been wondering that since I heard they asked people to wave a sheet or towel--how the heck do people get up there?
I'm so very glad your friends are safe--wow, one step and in the boat! It defies the imagination.
OMG Raven!
Luckily they have a dormer window with a little ledge of roof under it and they crawled out there. I can't imagine how difficult it would be with the dogs too.
Another one of my neighbors that I was working desperately to get rescued last night is handicapped. Not in a wheelchair but walker. And elderly. She was trapped in her second story too. I have no idea how they got her out. I can't get any information about her or her rescue. I hope she made it OK.
There were a couple looking to get rescued last night in wheelchairs. One man in his 70s was sitting out in water above his waist for hours. Hypothermia was setting in. Finally he was rescued.
They were telling people not to go in the attic unless they had power tools to cut through the roof.
My friends had a lantern and they were flashing a flashlight off and on. That's how he spotted them, they have a heavily treed lot.
When the water reaches the roofline, I believe it becomes easier to crawl onto your roof. You could not erect a ladder at all because the water at ground level is too swift to be stable.
Raven, I'm so glad you're safe but this is just unbelievable. I'm amazed that the death toll is only 10 so far. I'm sure there will be many others found when the water goes down. NYTimes had an interesting article comparing Katrina to Harvey. New Orleans and Houston are very different cities in many, many ways.
Garage and walkway have flooded, front yard is a lake. That means I've lost most of my stuff which was in boxes in the garage waiting for the move that is supposed to happen in a few weeks.
Thankful you got out. Praying for all of you!
Oh no Lucille I was hoping you could get through with no damage. I will be praying it stops!
The storm is FINALLY moving! Baytown is getting hit now. It may go in a northern direction.
AR 3am this morning I was woke up to a very alarming sound. AIR BOATS right near us. My first thought was the water has reached us here in our safe place. I got online to our nextdoor forum and asked if anyone knew what was going on. It was an air boat rescue in the subdivision directly across from this one but they were unloading it in the street right next to us. We were still OK.
This morning we have some very good news! The creek level is dropping! Going down instead of up! It will be a slow pace because everything is so overwhelmed but it is a happy moment. We are so anxious to get back to see what we have. I am praying that some of the important things in the Rv are safe. I don't have much hope for the house. If we can get the Rv dried out and a new mattress we can put dehumidifiers in and start the disinfecting process and then hopefully be able to stay there till we can get some things done and get insurance started. We will have to be here for that process to get started, inspection and all that.
A small ray of sunshine in our very bleak view!
Keep up the good work with thoughts and prayers!
Raven, I get overwhelmed just thinking about what all of you are facing in the aftermath. I wish I could be there to lend a hand and a strong shoulder. Keep your chin up! After seeing the pix of Rockport and the terrible destruction there plus all of the flooding, it's more than my old brain can handle.
Praying that you can muster this nightmare with the help of many people. Did your neighbor and the sprites get out okay? Seeing the poor confused elderly and handicapped is haunting. What could we, the group of people here, do to help? I know for sure if we were nearby you'd have a good troop of workers. I can donate and keep praying.
You know unfortunately so many people and companies are donating thousands of dollars that none of us will ever see a dime of. We did not get a dime from anyone last year. We got the minimal amount from fema which of course we pay premiums for so not free. I don't know where that money goes. Not talking about red cross they use it for all the stuff they do and provide for all their needs.
I wish there were more ways those affected could actually get some of the assistance that is being given.
It was suggested I set up a go fund me, which many here have done, but I just don't feel comfortable doing it. I wish my husband's company would set one up for us. Believe me we are going to need assistance! In so many ways.
You are so awesome to want to help us.
I've been overwhelmed and confused by all of this too. Things are ok where I'm at but this could have very easily been San Antonio and Austin. I want to help so bad but don't know where to start. I've been trying to help by reposting posts from people who need to be rescued just to help get the word out.
I would like to physically volunteer somewhere even if it's just in my city for now. I will try to look up some sights to see which ones would be the best for donations for any of you who would like to help in that way. If any of you know of sites taking donations that are being put to good use right away please post them. Any sites for people but also for pets.
KT members affected by this if you need any help please let us know. We're a family here and I know we would like to help you!
ravencajun Zone 8b TX this is why I've been wary of donating. Like you said you never know where that money is going. That's why I have wanted to actually physically help where I can. And sometimes you hear these places just say oh just give us money. I'm sure there are people that would rather have help in person now and if people want to help let them.
Do not feel bad about asking for help. You've been through a lot! Maybe if you have a paypal people can send money to you that way.
I had a brief glimpse of the sun this morning. It was behind thin layers of clouds, but it's trying to come back.
I just went and dropped off my donations for the local shelter with one of the neighbors. I normally go buy specific items to donate, but I only have access to one store and they are making people stand in a long line to go in. It can take a few hours to shop. I've heard the line was because of fire code. I imagine long lines will be here for a while. The stores are going to have a hard time restocking because they can't get trucks in.
We're starting to hear about people running out of food. Some people simply can't get out of their neighborhood. My daughter said a friend of a friend was stuck behind the gate in a gated community yesterday. I guess they didn't open the gates when they could??? I'm not sure. I saw a post from another area of town where the person said they had access to a store, but no money because they make their money day to day and haven't worked for a few days.
I don't if this exists, but I wondering if there was a way to donate goods through Walmart or Target??? For instance, you order diapers, non-perishable food, clothes, blankets, etc. and ask for in-store delivery in a specific area and ask that the item you pay for be delivered to a shelter.
If you want to donate to the Red Cross for Harvey Amazon is matching donations (up to one million). Also the Red Cross has a wish list you can order from if you want to send items.
I was thinking in terms of getting help to specific people or areas. The Red Cross works where it works, but some others could also use help.
A news segment I saw last night had a specific shelter open, but there was no FEMA or Red Cross yet. I don't why they didn't have food because they were at a school. Another shelter at a school is using the week's worth of food that would have fed students to feed the people at the shelter.
After people get to safety...and the water recedes...then what?
I'm reading that 380,000 people left New Orleans after Katrina. Three devastating floods in three years in Houston would 'move' me. (But *could* I move?)
Is it rational to believe that a city with such a high water table can/will be made habitable for the inflated population? I hear talk of 'relocation', but didn't people relocate TO these places in search of jobs and a lower cost of living?
Enormous problems, big and small.
I've been worried about the Katrina migrants too chisue. I know we ended up with many here in Nashville, and it made me wonder how many moved back after. Some, but not all. Here's where they ended up, and Houston, TX is 46,000+. You are spot on. Hope they're not having too much trouble, mentally. It's got to be ultra-tough when it's actually happening on the anniversary of Katrina. It's so horrible all the way around.
My aunt and her husband puts together bags for disasters in the US and around the world. They also travel with them to help deliver and disperse. I have heard from them and from past disasters you need to wait until help is called for or are close enough to the situation to know where your help is needed.
I wish there was a good way to get help and in whatever form was needed to people who need it right now. I think the only way to do that is to google subdivision community pages to see if people are putting out requests and then shipping items to where they are.
Raven, Marilyn, Lucille, if you aren't comfortable with a gofundme I hope you'll consider an Amazon wish list once they are able to get back into where you're staying to deliver. You could put gift cards for restaurants on it, clothes in the correct sizes, animal food, etc. Things you need.
Raven are you still in your RV??
Lea, she has a reply close to the top 1/4 of the page. The rv flooded and they had to be rescued by boat. They only got themselves, their dog and her husband's phone.
I don't know where some of the people will go. I suspect rent and housing prices will go up to crazy levels again for what is physically available here.
We've tried to get two different families to come stay with us. One physically couldn't make it here. He was downstream from two dams that were set to release water so he needed to leave. His family found a hotel. I'm not sure about his house. I suspect it is flooded now.
The other had big dogs (not sure what kind) and was afraid to come. I'm not sure if he could get here. Then his area started evacuating. He was afraid he would get separated from the dogs. We told him to bring them and if they didn't get along with my pets, we'd put our cat and our dog on one side of the house and their dogs on the other. DH just talked to him and he has two inches of water in the house and they have two stories so it's manageable. The rain is starting to move out, but I'm not sure how he is affected by the upstream.
I just saw your post Lucille. I was hoping you had avoided the flooding. (((Lucille)))
You are so correct this is multiple level situation. Nothing is going to happen to remedy this situation. More and more building and concrete going in and no building of ways to get rid of the water. If there are not dramatic changes this can only get worse. Horrible city planning. We will not do it again. We will move out of here. We physically and financially simply cannot do it.
Our immediate problems are a place to live right now. Last year we had the Rv. There will be limited places available that did not flood and they will go fast. Plus they must allow Mia. Also we have zero transportation right now. We desperately need to get to a grocery store that is open to get some food and to a place where we can get a few clothes. Flooded streets are making it very difficult plus as mentioned the lines. I don't have a wheelchair I know there won't be a scooter available any where in stores. So you see the dilemma!
One step at a time.
I suspect I live within 30 minutes of Raven on a good day and would be happy to provide a ride to the store so she could get what she needs. There is no way for me to get to her. I can't drive more than 2-3 miles in any direction.
Y'all are sounding very upbeat despite all this monstrosity. I'm proud of you! Sounds like solid Americans, and Texans! Stay strong.
I just read all of Raven's posts. I am so sick to my stomach... and wish, there was a way to help all of the flood victims.
But alas, there isn't a way to get in there... and there isn't a way to let someone come here with pets. :(
If we end up with a go fund me page info, I will know how to help. Has anyone here ever set one up?
Raven , I admire your pragmatic attitude. I would be screaming or in a catatonic coma by now after all you went thru. You are a strong woman and I so admire you. I read how you did all your improvements after your last storm and to see this all ruined is beyond heartbreaking. I surely wouldn't want to risk it happening again and I can see why you made this decision. I hope you get a nice place to stay with your beloved Mia till you decide. (((((Raven))))
Raven my prayers are for you and all Texans. I have a Sister in Law and a Nephew who live in Plano and so far they are okay. God Bless all of you.
Our Chicago Tribune had a story on the "Cajun Navy" -- pretty much anyone along the Louisiana/Texas border with a boat and willing to help. The story quoted people with great old French surnames like Gaspard and Aucoin. They say Texans helped them during Katrina, and they are just returning the favor.
Right now, people are in shock, and manners and good fellowship reign. It's only human nature that that fabric will tear, as this crisis continues.
I hear that breweries are canning water instead of beer and sending that. Can the US Army provide and deliver food -- sanitation?
Most of my family around the Houston area have been evacuated from their homes( a few are lucky ), some flooded and some may still possibly flood but you really can't stay even if the house isn't flooded because there's no electric and you can't really use the sewer systems either so you really can't stay. Hopefully my one sister's house will not flood...so far they've been lucky but not so much for all the neighboring homes in their subdivision. I think their house is one of the highest there. Last I heard, they were leaving by boat and were taken to a church...fixing to go stay with relatives that are high and dry and more to the North. Their house has not yet taken on water though.
I can't begin to imagine going through the terror of the anticipation of a huge storm event, having to endure the worst of it and then evacuate and then ultimately cleanup and rebuilding. My best wishes to anyone who's had to live through such an awful experience.
A few days before the storm came onshore, a news show I was watching (I forget which station) had an interview with a guy who was identified as being the general manager of the Houston Drainage System or something like that. He was very lackadaisical in saying that the region's drainage canals was poorly designed and were very lacking in capacity but that no further work or changes were contemplated because "it would be too expensive". He went on to say something like "area residents must expect that because heavy rainfall happens regularly, flooding and property damage will also happen regularly and it won't change because there's nothing we can do about it". It made me think Okay, you've given it your best shot and have completely given up. It's time to get someone a little more energetic and positive into the job. With an attitude like that, it may also be time for area residents to head farther inland, to higher ground, or elsewhere. What a frustrating situation.
My son and a friend asked us to take them to a shelter to volunteer. The first two shelters were turning away donations and volunteers. We ended up at a church. There were people dropping off truckloads of stuff. It was all being sorted as it came in. Food was being gathered as it came in and was immediately put into a pickup truck and hauled off. Not sure where. It may have been back to the shelter and they were just trying to organize traffic better so the people who needed to stay there could get there. Apparently, the second shelter had just opened today.
Yes, the Army does help. Last year after Matthew, my daughter at Ft Bragg, was part of a unit that supported the National Guard. It's usually the other way around... NG providing support to the Army. This pic was 12 DAYS after the flooding.
Sorry, can't seem to rotate the pic.
This morning I attended a town meeting for disaster relief. I'll come back later with the details.
This is just the beginning of people needing help, once people have no place to go because their homes are uninhabitable, they will be PILING into the shelters and then they will need all the supplies and help they can get their hands on!
Adellabella: A news segment I saw last night had a specific shelter open, but there was no FEMA or Red Cross yet. I don't why they didn't have food because they were at a school. Another shelter at a school is using the week's worth of food that would have fed students to feed the people at the shelter.
But isn't school only just starting? So not all the supplies for schools wouldn't have been shipped into them yet, and certainly roads are mostly impassible right now.
RE GoFundMe: Someone or more than someone above suggested this. I'd recommend setting these up now. I looked into making one (for someone else) a couple years ago and it is easily do-able. On FB, a friend pointed me to a GoFundMe for a specific long term friend of theirs, and even tho this is a friend of a friend, I plan to donate. Part of me is leery of the Red Cross and other large efforts -- they do good work, but the trickle down effect is less immediate. PS: the specific GoFundMe asked for $5K just to keep afoot, but they now have $9+K and counting, after 24 hours. (Several people affected, including children and pets and one person with medical issues, and total loss of home that they'd just purchased this past spring, and not in a flood plain so no flood insurance.)
PS: I want to support BOTH large scale efforts from reputable sources, as well as local individuals as indicated...
Artemis: School already started there. They would have had the food the students were supposed to eat for the week.
Some ways to help ... http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/ways-can-help-people-hurricane-harvey/
I chose Austin Pets Alive and one of the food banks.
Raven, I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine what you and your neighbors are going through. I have no words.
Raven, I'm so sorry for what you're going through! I know first-hand about it, though, because my daughter's home in north Houston flooded twice, in 1994 and again in 1998. First time they had over 6 ft. of water in the house, lost nearly everything and to totally rebuild from the floor up. Second time "only" 6 inches, but still devastating, cause the flooring, sheetrock, furniture, etc. had to be replaced because of the mildew and mold. Now she's living in a different home in Kingwood after a divorce and so far, her house is o.k. She can't leave the neighborhood, though, because all the streets are flooded. Her former house where her ex still lives has water over the roof. Such a sad time for so many people. And it will be quite a while before they can even get into their homes to try to salvage anything because of the continuous flooding and overflowing creeks, bayous and rivers around them. One of the only things others can do for Houstonians and area people is pray.
I wonder how things are with Lucille.
Unfortunately, I'm an unwilling participant when my mind wants to mentally create/recreate certain scenarios.
I am here. I'm feeling guilty that I have not reached out to help others but I'm just numb and depressed at the loss of all the things packed in the garage, it was a lot of stuff. I'm waiting until the water in the garage recedes before going through the stuff and trying to salvage what I can.
The garage was full of personal stuff, linens, tools, books, etc. but there was some furniture still in the house. With what I can salvage, I will have enough unlike others who lost everything- furniture, cars, as well as stuff. So in many ways I am more fortunate than many.
I used to be much more resilient, but it will take some time to get over this.
I got some help from an acquaintance who actually arrived by kayak this afternoon. He retrieved my huge city trash can from a block away where it had floated, and unplugged the deep freeze in the garage which was making odd noises but I had been apprehensive about standing in the water and grabbing the plug.
My heart goes out to Raven and everyone else who has suffered losses in the past few days.
One nice thing I saw is that people from Canada, France, the UK and other countries are sending donations and prayers.
Lucille, I feel for you. Since you were moving, you had probably already purged and got rid of what you didn't want. What was in the garage was what you really wanted. I would be numb also.
I'm so sorry that you've lost your personal belongings, Lucille. You have nothing to feel guilt over. Take care of yourself.
Re the schools having food supplies. I don't know about Texas, but here food is not cooked in the schools and hasn't been for years. The exception to that here is our local vocational school that teaches culinary and baking and pastry. We wouldn't have the food supply available for such situations.
My heart aches while reading along with all here about the impact this storm has had on our "family" members. The attitudes you have displayed has been remarkable! I hope it gives Raven, Marilyn, Lucille some comfort to keep us updated because it surely comforts us. We hurt along with you. Know that we care and want to help....if only in prayer, in listening, whatever gives you a shoulder. We cannot begin to imagine the circumstances in which you find yourselves. I think I can speak for others in wanting to help....but would like to help directly....to those of our "family"......if only we could figure out how!!! I, personally, would rather know any donation would surely find the rightful person....with no strings attached, no wait, the right size, the most needed....to fill particular needs of our devastated friends. Guide us if you can. ~ Raven: does the elderly neighbor with whom you are staying have a computer? How far from her would be the nearest open road? I can't begin to guess when mail would again be delivered! ~ We are all sending our prayers and love....which seems so trite.....but is heartfelt.
Tami, only a couple of our schools have kitchens that actually are working kitchens too. I know a few of the grade schools are in receipt of hot lunches brought in from a central area.
In our big storm almost 10 years ago, the high school was on the grid that got power back in three days (as did our residential block, we were so lucky). It has a working kitchen, cooks. But after so many hours without power and the temperature to which many items may have been exposed, by regulation they couldn't serve it to the students. No food, no school. Kids didn't go back for another week when the highways were all opened and new products stocked.
Saw this video showing some aerial footage of the northeast area.

I have just seen a Facebook post from Marilyn. Not good news. there was 3' of water in the house, water over her head as she tried to rescue the horses that she thought yesterday were safe. The horses and Marilyn & DH are now safe, but they have lost 2 of the donkeys and both trucks.
I have no words.
Oh no!
I am so worried for everyone down there! If it is already this bad, what's going to happen when it rains again?
Tami- thank you SOO much for the update on Marilyn.
Lucille, I'm so sorry for your losses. Based on your previous post,I was hoping that you would be in the clear. I hope you are able to salvage some of your possessions.
Heartbreaking news from Marilyn. Feel terrible about the donkeys, the trucks and the house, but am grateful she, Jody and the rest of the horses are safe. What a terrifying ordeal that must have been. Marilyn, if you see this, I am so very sorry.
Oh No. Can you let her know we're thinking of her and of Jody?
Omg no! I thought she was going to be OK. I heard them mention chocolate bayou once yesterday but I missed what they said. That's terrible. Losing any life is something totally different than losing other things. I hope the boats are OK.
There was a police officer lost in the water last night. Tragedy. This seems to just keep pumping out the bad stuff in so many ways.
Marilyn thinking about you! I wish I could help you out. My sympathy on your loses.
So sorry for all the losses! Lucille I'm so glad you're here! Marilyn I'm so glad you're safe and so very sorry about the donkeys. My good thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.
We donated money to Samaritan's Purse, which is our regular place to donate in disaster situations. I'm just a lurker here but wanted to mention that they are lining up volunteers to go physically help and have disaster teams on site already. Thought I'd mention this for those that want to help, you might want to check this out. volunteering and donating help to Houston
The water has receded from the garage and walkway, and I can see most of the sidewalk that goes to the door in the front yard. The bottom layer of boxes in the garage are soaked so I will be going through those and disposing of the ruined stuff today. But the top layer have only the bottom area wet so it may be that some of the contents will be OK.
I've still lost a lot and have a ton of work to do but it seems that the receding water and new day have given me a little hope and energy, and yesterday I wasn't feeling hope I was feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, and apprehensive that there would be further flooding.
Another good piece of news is that the house was sold two weeks ago so I do not have to worry about any water damage to the house itself although I am happy for the new owners that the water looks like it affected only the garage and walkway. And they know people who can come in and help.
Marilyn I am so sorry about the donkeys and any damage to your home. Raven, words cannot express how upset I am that you have had to go through all of this. I truly hope there is a way that your home's value can be given to you so that you can find a different place to live.
While this was characterized as a 'once in 500 year' flood, it is my opinion that climate changes may lead to more frequent events of this nature and while I am going to stay in Texas I am moving away from the coast. Enough is enough, I have been through too many hurricanes.
Lucille, I am glad you have got some better news. This is awful. That's good news about the new owners already having help.
Marilyn, I am so sorry about the donkeys. I have been lurking and following your adventures with the horses and all the other animals. You do such good work for them.
We are going to be getting the leftovers of Harvey late today and tomorrow in North Alabama. TVA has already lowered Guntersville and Wilson lakes to try to control the flooding. I hope we don't get too many tornadoes. We are a Torcon 4.
Marilyn.....what about all the other animals you often have as rescues?
I'm sorry this has happened to all of you in the path of this distruction.
Sherry you are in my thoughts.
Raven, if you have been moved to the Dallas area, I have a friend who can get you a wheelchair. Just let me know.
I'm going to check Facebook now to check on Marilyn.
Lucille, so glad you have little damage.
Marilyn's post? I missed it....anyone care to tell me what she said? I'm not on Facebook...

Oh nooooo, thank God she and her husband are safe.
I'm sooo concerned about the children. Here's a new release which has me in tears. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/harvey-horror-shivering-tot-found-clinging-to-drowned-mom/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab6a&linkId=41608001
I am so sorry to hear about Marilyn's situatuon. I fear also for Terilyn since we haven't heard from her. And Lucille, so sorry you had water too. This whole thing just makes me sick every time I see a new story on TV. I feel very fortunate right now. We had a flood in a house once and I know what you're dealing with, both emotionally, financially, and in so many other ways.
Marilyn had about 60 cats, 6 dogs and a pig. All pets. Are they ALL gone?
How horrible all around. The media of course centers on Houston and other centers, but there are all the people in the outlaying areas, like Marilyn, which are on their own. People from here are heading your way to help out in the countryside.
I am so upset to hear that Marilyn was so seriously affected. Losing any life is the worst tragedy. So sad.
I know I have been worried about terrilyn too. I lost all my contacts in my drowned phone and my address book.
If everyone that has Raven's number, or address will contact her, she can rebuild her address book!
Moni
Oh, my. I'm not on FB and didn't get the updated news yesterday. How awful.
Raven ~ I know this is small given the big picture...but I think you can download your call history from your provider.
I think one of the next miseries will be mosquitoes. My bagged trash floated out of the trash can a block away and so I just went to retrieve it and there were plenty mosquitoes out there. The water has receded but some of the streets remain flooded and the city mosquito truck may not be able to get through.
Oh, I'm sick about what I've just read about Marilyn. She's a tough person but this is too much. Thank you for posting about her. And of course I'm feeling badly for all of you Texans who have been affected--sure hope someone hears from Terrilyn soon.
Raven , have you been able to get out and get what you need yet?
I'm just now reading that Marilyn has lost two donkeys. This is all just so heart breaking. Praying that she, Jody, the horses and all of her other animals are safe and stay safe.
Raven, have you been able to get food? I'm sure the lady you are staying with would be running out and if she doesn't have any pets, there would be no food for Mia.
Raven can't really get out... she is without her mobility devices... aka, wheel chair, mobility chair, car etc.!
Roads are starting to open up now. My area has grocery stores, Lowes and some restaurants open. There are curfews in place. I'd still be leery about driving in the dark. Raven, if you haven't gotten help yet, please post. I can bring you things if I can get there.
I know she doesn't have her chair, but she can ride in a car just for a change of scenery. Someone can bring her supplies.
If you can get to Walmart, you can order online(groceries, ect) and they will bring to your car.
Marilyn has not posted today and didn't mention the other animals that I saw, so I don't know about them. I will keep watching for her to post again and will let her know you are all thinking of her.
Terilyn is ok. Has a houseful, and will check in as soon as she can.
Thanks Tami.....I can't help but wonder if Marilyn has lost her animals feed to water.
I would think so Morz8, but I don't know for sure. I was just on Facebook, and didn't see anything further from her. If I see anything posted, I will let you know.
Marilyn is swamped with problems...TueLo didn't make it;2 donkeys were lost(I suppose drowned, she didnt specify);the pigs, being feral, she is hoping went to higher ground;the house as of yesterday had 3' or more of water in it...dogs were all on her bed;both of their trucks are destroyed/damaged....she & Jodi are at a friends house not far from her own place.
Oh no!
I'm so sad for her animals, and for her. If someone is in contact with her....would she let us know if there is something we can do.
It breaks my heart to hear of Marilyn's losses. Tragedy.
To answer the question yes I was able to get out today! A neighbor came and got us. I was able to use the transport walker of the lady I am staying with since we were just going out for a short time. We got lucky the Kroger was not crowded and there were scooters available. There was an att store next door so I got a replacement phone. Not everything is on it but a lot is. We saw the sun! The water dropped a lot! We could not get down our street boats only but we could see the roof of husband's truck! We are watching the TV right now and the just showed video by a drone going down my street! Saw my friends house but they can it off before my house. But the water looks like it was about the middle of the house. Here's some pics from my subdivision.
Raven, that's positive news. I know it feels good just to get out and do something different.
Dh's friend with the little boys came last night. He lives below the dam that has the uncontrolled release. Another neighbor of his was somehow able to get back in and take photos. As of this morning, the water was not above his driveway. Not sure if it will get in or not, but if it does, they are hoping it is just the garage. They have another friend a couple of hours away that has a fully furnished house between leases. The wife and kids will stay there a couple of weeks while the husband comes back when he has to go back to work. There will still be some cleanup at their house and they have a boil water order. They left here in better spirits today.
Raven if you have the same phone number as before, and text, I can text you my information if you want it.
Glad the water is going down, and you could get out and get some things you needed.
Yes I have a phone now same number if you had the cell number not the house.
I think I over exerted myself today and seeing the devastation up close, I got a little bit ill feeling. I just woke up to take some medication and decided to check in.
The number I have ends in 01.
Sorry to hear you over did. I am sure the situation is not helping.
Tami, it ends in 06
Moni, got your voicemail. Will call you tomorrow.
The number I have for Raven does end in 01. I see now that I have home written next to it, not cell. :(
