I buy from them, but mainly just for Vietnamese cinnamon and Four Cinnamon Mix and High Fat Cocoa. I have tried a few others but not a lot.
Here is a link to Penzeys website for those who don't know them.
I like their Pork chop blend and Chesapeake bay for seafood.
We purchased some many years ago and let my middle son know. He (or his wife) sent a huge box for a gift. We're still working on it. I use what we have liberally; however, the missus is less inclined. It has been a while, I guess that those items have lost a bit of their flavor, but I still like to use them.
So many options!
I really like the Pasta Sprinkles for anything with an Italian style red sauce. I love using the Bavarian Seasoning on roasts. I too like the Vietnamese cinnamon, and have enjoyed their Tuscan Sunset too.
I generally buy the separate spices and herbs but the one seasoning I use and love is the Northwoods Fire. It is a good combination with a chipotle kick to add to soups or any dishes that need a little extra flavor.
I haven't bought a lot from them, but they have a nice affordable gift pack at Christmas, and a gift card makes a good gift as well.
use and love: galena street, chicago steak seasoning., BBQ3000 and BBQ3001, pie spice, cake spice, pumpkin spice, garlic powder (strong but good and use less than other brands), oregano.
there's a store in Philly, so i make a couple of trips a year!! love that store!! and they send coupons for free spices too!!
I had never heard of Pensky's until I discovered one of their stores while I was at a clients one day. I love how they have sample jars so you can walk the store and smell all the different mixes.
I tried their chicken soup base and it was amazing. Small jar and a bit expensive, but it's very concentrated and doesn't take much to get a lot of flavor.
My Son in law loves to cook international foods so I bought Ajwain and some curry spices for him that he said were excellent as well.
All their spices are high quality, no doubt about that! I use the Bavarian blend on any meat and even my picky daughter likes it. I like the Turkish, and Northwoods blends also. They also sell candied ginger in little chunks that are just right for a taste, or adding to yogurt etc.
I just buy the basics -- I don't care for the blends that they do . . . although I've tried a few and friends do rave about them -- they're just not for me.
I regularly use their Bavarian, BBQ of the Americas, Cajun, Chile Con Carne and Shallot Pepper Seasoning mixes.
Thanks for all of your very good suggestions.....many of those mentioned are are long time favorites. Raven, you reminded me that I've been wanting to try their Chesapeake blend, which I fully expect to be better than Old Bay!
Spent about $70.00 restocking my spices, many of them my staples, but I always like to try a few new ones, too. Love their blends!
There is a Pennzey's store near me and I buy most of my spices there. Some of my favorites are the whole nutmeg, the Salad Sprinkle and the candied ginger. If you are on their mailing list, you also get coupons for free bottles of various seasonings.
Good to read all of this. I ordered from Pennzey's a couple of days ago. Trying out some basic spices. Will get more adventurous as money allows.
I discovered Penzey's many years ago when I was searching for some ideas for salt free seasonings. Some of their blends are really nice, using herbs and spices that I wouldn't want to have individual jars of, nor do I have the knowledge of their flavors.
They sent me a jar of their cinnamon blend with my first order and I became forever hooked on all of their cinnamon varieties. Any other brand tastes like sawdust to me now, lol!
cacoco, I hope that you enjoy your order!
Too many favorites to mention and so many delicious suggestions have been given, but I wanted to say watch out for their offers not only of reduced purchase amount for free shipping, but for free stuff, which they are very generous at doing.
Many times, I've received just as many freebies as things ordered!
I adore Penzeys.
Oh...I will toss this one out there...their Bay leafs are the most fragrant I've ever used and wouldn't trust my soups and stews etc. with any old supermarket bay ;-)
mimi, I totally agree about the Bay leaves. As far as basics go, their peppercorns are unbelievably flavorful and I have expanded my repertoire of pepper because of the quality and freshness of their products.
A freebie with this order is their Sate Blend, which I have never ordered and will be interested in using.
It should be said that the prices are extremely reasonable, especially when you take into account the truly incredible freshness and flavor of their herbs and spices.
I've heard great things about them, but have never ordered. I get quite a few herbs and spices from TJ Maxx, including Vietnamese cinnamon. I can't attest to the freshness though (it seems fresh, but what do I know?), and the prices seem to be about the same as Penzey's. How are their shipping charges?
My bay leaves are fresher--I just go outside and pick them off of the tree. :) I dislike the flavor that dried bay leaves produce in a dish, so I always use fresh instead.
Alisande, the shipping charges fluctuate.....from free with no strings to free after a specified total. I purchase all of my herbs, spices, and flavorings there a couple of times a year. Reaching their minimum ($30) is never a problem for me.
Arizona Dreaming and Lamb Seasoning are my favorites, and the Bay Leaves are great. Also, love the free or reduced-price items that they offer from time to time.
Sometimes you don't have to buy anything to get a freebie!
I also love the personal stories and recipes in the magazine and look forward to reading all of them.
The owner is quite the activist and passionate.
Great company.
As I posted in another thread, this one inspired me to try Penzeys for gift-giving, and that worked out very well. But that put me on their mailing list, and that led to me becoming totally seduced by their sales and offers of free shipping, etc. Well, my version of "totally seduced" is probably more benign that what some others might experience, but I'll be giving more gift boxes for Christmas and I'm looking forward to trying a few more of their products myself.
I'm hooked on one already: Brady Street Cheese Sprinkle. I don't eat cheese, and I dislike cheese on popcorn, but a very light hand with this makes my air-popped popcorn the best popcorn ever.
I thought it was worth resurrecting Rhizo's thread to say so. :-)
Hey, that sounds great!
Be sure to try the Tuscan Sunset Italian mix, if you haven't already. I find myself reaching for it for all kinds of dishes...eggs, veggies, pizza, chicken, herb butter, roasts, sauces, and more.
Oh, no! You can be sure I will, Rhizo. :-)
there's a Penzey's STORE not too far from me in Philly area. I'm SCARED TO DEATH to go there. have a feeling it would make Whole Paycheck... i mean Whole Foods look tame by comparison??
a few years back made several herb/spice blends as part of Christmas goodie basket gifts. could cut WAY back on salt in mixes. when you buy something like "lemon pepper" seasoning and first ingredient is SALT... what's with that?
A favorite blend of mine is Ras el Hanout. I haven't tried Penzey's version (I assume they have one) and apparently every spice shops version is slightly different, but every version of it that I have had has been wonderful.
Hmmm. I've just checked their website and unless I'm missing something, they don't offer Ras el Hanout. How disappointing.
I'd never heard of Ras el Hanout, so I looked it up. Sounds wonderful! Here's a recipe. I have all the ingredients, so I'm psyched. Thanks, Bob!

PS: Penzey's might give it another name. Maybe one of their more experienced customers will know.
Also, review say the recipe is missing turmeric and paprika, so I'll add those. But which paprika--plain or smoked?
Oh, the seasoning for air-popped popcorn sounds perfect. I will take this excuse to stop by my local Penzeys- besides I am in the middle of moving into a new house and need to get a lot of new spices- I tossed all the old ones before moving. I love that place.
bob_cville, they don't have a Ras el Hanout blend. I asked if they were considering one, they answer was "no", but they would add it for future consideration. If a few others asked, maybe we could get one made!
anorignal, Penzey's has a salt-free Lemon Pepper called "Sunny Spain." Delicious!
I of course lost all my spices and seasonings so I will be making an order after we are in the rv. I will have to be very selective and minimal because I won't have the luxury of lots of storage space. But I can't do without certain things! The gift basket is a great idea for Christmas. This year we have all decided not to do gifts because of our situation but will definitely keep it in mind for the future.
Raven, at your suggestion, I did try the Chesapeake Bay mix and will never buy Old Bay seasoning again.
