My dear brother brought me a load of gravel today ...

mama goose_gw zn6OH

... just as I was getting ready to walk out the door to pick up our mother at physical therapy, where I'd left her an hour earlier. He'd been telling me he was going to bring the gravel for the last three weeks--I wanted to make sure it was on the driveway before the bad weather starts. I should have known better when he said it would take only a couple of minutes to spread it with his dump truck.

I moved my car and truck up into the back yard, so that the drive was clear and he had room to turn around behind the house. He made the first pass, turned around, and just as he pulled even with the back of my house, the dump bed stuck, and he dropped a huge pile in the middle of the driveway. A pile 15" high, the width of the driveway, and there was nothing either of us could do to stop it. And both of my vehicles were in the back yard.

I grabbed two shovels, and said, "OK, buddy, we're digging me outta here, unless you want to pick up Mom in the dump truck." Which he thought would be hilarious.

We cleared enough gravel for me to squeeze my car around, with him doing the 'turn this way--turn the other way' hand signals, and then I shoveled gravel for an hour after I returned home. I finally gave up and mowed grass until after dark. I still have a nice pile to finish tomorrow ... but it's my son-in-law's day off, and I'll have help.

So, I did three things today. ;)

I think the look on your mother's face when she saw her "ride" was a dump truck would be hilarious too. I wonder if climbing up into a dump truck would be considered additional therapy.

You had an active day! Hope you don't have any pulled muscles.

As soon as I got to the part about putting both vehicles in the back I was thinking Uh-oh.

You are a very tolerant person. I hope shoveling gravel was something you expected to do some of anyway. :) Still, it was nice of your brother to bring you gravel, and he gave you sibling ammunition which you can bank for the future. :)

Hope you guys had a good laugh over this. Sharing a laugh with a brother is always a good thing.

That would have been a tough job, moving a pile of gravel. I hope your son-in-law can pitch in with the rest.

Wow, what a workout!!! I too think it would have been hilarious to pick up your mom in the dump trucks. Dump trucks......all trucks fascinate me. I'm so glad you saw the humour in it, not many would have. :-)

Today I am no worse for wear, and our mother has another funny story to tell about her children. ;) My brother has a great sense of humor, and I know he felt bad about the mess. He has an excavating business--I paid for the gravel, but he wouldn't take any money for his time or fuel, and he didn't have time to stay and spread the gravel by hand.

It's raining here, so SIL and I haven't tackled the remaining 1/3 of the pile. That's a drainage ditch on the other side of the driveway--my truck slid into it earlier this year, after a big snow, which is why I wanted some fresh gravel. The back corner of the house is immediately to the right, just off camera.

Mama goose, what crop grows in that field? Looks like corn but can't tell for sure.

That's stubble from the neighbor's corn. They rotate with soy beans and hay--the fields across the road were planted with beans this year. Every corn year, we get used to the screen, then when it comes down, we feel exposed to the world again!

ha ha, I know what you mean. After the corn is picked, you say to yourself, "Oh the neighbors did this or built that over the summer huh?" The field behind me is also rotated but with hay and soy beans. Seems all the big fields down the road were corn this year, when normally they are soy beans.

I meant to say, the field behind me is rotated with CORN and soybeans.

Corn and crossroads ... don't mix well.

As with brothers and loads of gravel, it appears.

Nice that your Mom enjoys a joke ... especially at her kids' expense?

we had something close but not so high...dh was alone and had to rake it..but darn it should have put some weed killer (but what about my critters??) so it was only "pretty" for a couple of weeks before the weeds started...he wants to do another layer where we have his motorhome parked...(another thing I don't talk about!!) do your neighbors "share" some of that corn?? lol...

joyful, that's one good thing about the corn being picked--it's much safer to back out of the driveway now.

susanjf_gw, we have great neighbors, and I'm sure they'd share if I asked for corn, or stalks for decoration, but it's field corn for their livestock, not good for 'roastneers'.

schoolhouse, that's exactly right, but in reverse--today as I was passing one of the neighboring farms, I realized that it was gone. No house, no barns, no equipment--the land has been leveled and seeded. I'd noticed that someone was cleaning up the place, assumed it was the grandson of the owners, who could no longer care for the land. I'd heard that they'd moved out of state to live with their daughter.

The old farmer was such a character and a fixture in the neighborhood. His other property, where he ran his cattle, joins our place, and I can't count the number of times we've chased the cattle out of our garden and yard. I'd call to let him know that they were out, and then help him chase them back through the fence. It's sad that he's gone, and so strange to realize that all traces of him and his wife are now gone from the land.

Oh, the gravel pile is now gone, too--DD and SIL finished spreading it for me. :)
