The Block Island North Lighthouse

bob_cville

The Block Island North Lighthouse. Its about a 20 minute walk across a
largely unused beach to reach it. The description of the hike warned
that sometimes nesting seabirds in the area will attack hikers.

We hiked past it to the northern point of the island

and then down the west side of the island ...

to the paths over the dunes to reach the lighthouse ...

I climb the last bit of dune to a narrow gap in the bushes ...

and emerge in the small paved area around the lighthouse, and birds are
everywhere. They all turn and stare at me, and I feel as if I've
blundered into an early scene in the movie "Birds".

I cautiously walk around the building as the birds stare and glare and grudgingly waddle out of my way.

and then start back toward where we started, because an impressive
looking storm is getting closer.

Beautiful photos!! Thank you so much for sharing them with us!! The one showing above the line " and then start back..." looks like a painting to me.

As we reach the beach the storm looks quite impressive

We pass a family of four that are still heading out towards the lighthouse.

They comment that they bicycled to the parking lot and hope they can make it back to their condo before the storm arrives. I don't see it happening....

As the storm get closer, it looks like a giant angry bird head

And slightly later it looks like the hand of god, about to smite the lighthouse.

We make it back to our car before the storm breaks, but feel sorry for the family we passed. I think they are getting soaked.

What a great group of photos! They make a nice story. You captured quite a few moods of the lighthouse during the trip. I love the unusual and dramatic clouds.

Thanks for taking me along (with your photos), Jim. My DM was from RI, and I spent many summers there as a child.

Thanks for sharing. Those cloud formations are truly awe inspiring. (I refuse to use the word awesome - I'm tired of hearing it used to describe everything).

Did you have any trouble with the birds? Nice pics!

We had no problems with the birds. I think it might only be during nesting season that it is a problem. They did give "stink eye" as if we were intruding on their private time relaxing on the beach.
