Time to bury the money!! New Year's Eve tradition
So if you have done this in the past it is time to do it again!
I have done it for years now and will continue to do it.
For those new to it, this is an extremely old tradition from various cultures, I learned of it years ago on another forum and continue it every year.
You basically bury a small amount of money on New years eve and dig it up on New years day and it is supposed to help have unexpected money come to you, not by any unpleasant means but by unexpected means. In other words not by a death and inheritance. It has happened each year for us, sometimes large amounts some times small. One year it was a check for a lawsuit we had no idea we were part of but it was an insurance company we had belonged to and when the case was settled they sent out checks to everyone it was around $300, totally unexpected and knew nothing about it.
So this is what you do.
Today anytime before midnight you take your money, I use a dollar bill because you can never spend this money, you can donate it but not spend it. So take the dollar bill, I put mine in a ziploc baggie, and take your spoon or trowel and dig a hole outside in the dirt or in a flower pot if you don't have a yard. As you dig you say I am burying my poverty I am burying my misfortune. Put the dollar or money in the hole and cover it up. I leave my trowel there so I remember where it is.
You are done for today.
On New Year's day(anytime before midnight) you go back out and dig it up, as you dig it up you say I am uncovering my wealth and my good fortune. Take the money and put it away never to be used.
I have a baggie full of the dollar bills I have used. I will donate them when I have a nice amount. Just remember you can not spend that money.
That is it all done. Sometime in the following new year you should unexpectedly get some money.
I do it just for the fun of it and that now it has become a fun tradition and hey if it works and money shows up that is all good too.
So do with it what you want! Have fun or ignore, it's all good.

We did it earlier today. It's our 4th time doing it. No money to speak of came to us, but we're still trying! :-)

We have had several this year and all very good ones.
We used to belong to an electric co-op at the Dallas house, we cancelled our services with them when we left there. Well a few months ago we got a check in mail from them for our share in the profits apparently we are still members. I contacted them to be sure and yes it is ours. That was a very nice one. Totally unexpected.
This must be a tradition in areas where the ground isn't frozen. :-)

Alisande, we've had a mild winter so far, today it's freezing, and I dug a little hole in the flowerbed. Other years I buried my loonie in a flowerpot.
No burying here, but I'm all ready to make a mess o' Hoppin' John and collard greens tomorrow!

Here we have blackeye peas any kind of way and of course cabbage one for wealth and one for health. Some people use greens instead of cabbage, we stick with the cabbage and we both love it.
Tomorrow I am cooking a huge beef brisket stuffed with onions and garlic, will make gravy from it for the best rice and gravy, blackeyes with tasso, the cabbage will be in a casserole, thin sliced potatoes, onions shredded cabbage and tiny bits of sausage for flavor all sauted down then put in a casserole dish and covered with shredded cheese and put in the oven to finish up and melt the cheese. Plus I am doing green and yellow wax beans. I have a multi berry cobbler in the oven now that will be desert.
Our neighbors are coming over and have never had an oven roasted brisket. It is one of my favorite things.
I wish I'd read this yesterday or I'd have buried money for sure. Next year...
Here, as the clock starts striking for 12 you're supposed to eat a grape at each strike & finish them by the last stroke of 12. Also, wear red panties on New Year's Eve if you want love or yellow for money. I didn't have either so I don't know what beige will bring.
LOL, we dug up our Loonie and cashed in our winning $3 lottery ticket for another $3 ticket and got another $3. It's heading in the right direction, but I'd sure like a few more zeroes!

Ginger that's funny about the undies! I don't have either of those colors either but I have a few pair with multiple color designs that would be my choice, with all the colors no telling what it would bring lol

Wow, Emma nice pic...never been on a cruise grrr...Sweetie has severe seasickness..We have traveled there 3 times and very much enjoy...one happy Island for sure...
Jade, It looks like a good wind would topple them. I enjoyed the Panama Canal Cruise which was this one and I also enjoyed the one in Alaska, but the others were boring and a very big waste of money.
The ground here was frozen but I found enough soft dirt up close to the foundation to just barely bury some coins.....went out this morning and dug it up. Now, just waiting for the money to start coming in!! :)
Raven, my free $3 scratch ticket today got me $10. I'm rubbing my hands in glee! LOL
I have never heard this. Wish I had known about it yesterday. I would have done it, and had the kids all come and do it! The kids could really use some extra money. I never heard about the color of panties to wear either!
Emma, that really does show the size of the ships! They sure have gotten bigger since we took our cruise 32 1/2 years ago.

Shoot I forgot the saying...but I reburied my $10 from last year and dug it up just before we left town this morning.
$10 Terri! Wow. I just use a loonie, so I guess any potential money coming towards me won't be anything exciting.
Remember that you have to keep the money you buried in an envelope; you can't put it in your purse and spend it.
Sometime along the way you can donate it, or some other kind deed.

You know I failed to mention in the directions this time that you can never use the money again for anything including reusing it to bury.

I went to add my dollar to my stash of previous years and I have quite a few bills in there. I might go ahead and donate it. I think I will let the animals have it and give it to a good local no kill shelter. It would buy some food for them.
Tami I would rather been on the ship you cruised on. Diamond Princess was okay, but the one I took to the British Isles was a 3500 passenger and way to big. You had to stand in line to eat then hunt a place to sit, usually outside somewhere.
Well I did it last year with this $10 bill. So I just keep it in a baggie hiding away..took it from it's hidey hole..buried it, then unburied. It'll go back in it's hiding spot til next year.
Last year I found $200 in the road. My husband was given a $10 bill in change back one day. He went to buy a latte and the girl marked it with a marker to check for counterfeit...we'll the mark stayed so she said I can't take that. So my husband looked it up online because it had an old printing date. Found out it was worth double it's face value. Lol it's not counterfeit, it's a different paper used for a few years.
It is now in a frame on the mantel. :)
Heehee, a little update.
I've been winning little amounts regularly on my scratch tickets. $3, $6, $10 etc. Last nite it was $50! And this is all in the last few weeks.
I think this has to do with the burying of our toonie! LOL. A few more zeroes and I'll be ecstatic.

Raven, just now seeing this, and I have never heard of this before...but I might do it next year....if I don't forget. I wanted to tell you what one of my friends does every year. He picks up any found money...like coins he finds on the parking lot, or whatever. He goes to the Texas City dike to fish a lot and often finds money there too. Just wherever he finds it. He puts it in a coffee can. At the end of the year, he puts it in a closet....writes the year on the cap of the can. He never spends it. I asked him if he counted it, and he said no. I have known him for 40 years and he has always done this. No telling how much money he has squirreled away like that.
He is one of my best friends. I call him a "junk" friend because that is our common interest...we go to the flea markets together. He is very quirky...you should see his house! He has a duplex....lives in both sides of it. He might be called a "hoarder" but he is very neat and clean and everything is extremely well organized. He has dozens of collections. Like, in his bedroom is a tall cabinet with glass doors and many shelves. In it is many, many, many figurines of women/girls in long dresses. I said, "David, what is this?"
He said, "Ladies in long dresses."
Lol that's funny. I would be a big time junker if I had the room especially the garden junk stuff, I love so much of that.
My husband does something similar as to collecting coins. He sorts out quarters especially the state quarters. He started it when they started with the states, he wanted all states. So he just started saving all quarters and still does. He has a very large big leather brief case type satchel that is full, weighs a ton. I find stashes of quarters every where. I did not realize how much he had till we moved.
He also picks up miscellaneous screws, bolts, washers, etc he finds in the parking lot or where ever, I find little piles of those too.
