Placemat sewing question

susan_onOctober 21, 2012

I posted this on the sewing forum, but it can be slow there. I know there are a lot of people here who have great sewing experience, so I thought I'd ask here. Probably a dumb question, but I want them to look nice when I'm done:

I don't do much sewing besides quilting, but I want to branch out. I have some leftover drapery fabric that I want to make into placemats. I want to put a decorative stitch around the edge. Because of the bulk, do you think a 1/4 inch seam would be wide enough? I just don't want the bulk to interfere with the decorative stitching. I'd appreciate any feedback or tips...

I think it would be fine.Try it on a scrap first and see if you like the way it looks.

Be sure you make your 'scrap' or trial piece the same thickness as your finished product will be; including the interior seams, if any.
