Mixing black granite and carrera marble?

Cari611December 13, 2012

Hi everyone! My kitchen is a galley shape with white cabinets and polished black granite countertops. At the end of one side of the galley, we are putting in a desk area/message center.

This desk will be several inches lower than the countertop so I was considering using honed carrera or other white or grey marble as the surface of the desk to provide a little contrast. The wall behind the desk is painted black with chalkboard paint, so I thought maybe the black countertop and black wall might be a bit much.

Will this just break things up visually and look added on, or is it OK to mix 2 surfaces on the same side of the kitchen like that?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

You certainly can, and I just did in my recent remodel (I added the wall unit and ordered new off-white cabinet doors/drawer fronts for my old cabinets to match the new style ones (and then painted the old boxes to match)). I also added a new backsplash. The tile for the backsplash and the new counter are both honed calacatta gold and the granite (which was already there) is black absolute polished (if you search, you can find the rest of the post from that remodel, but this should give you what you need):
