My x-mas stuff is up! Let me see your holiday kitchen...

jgoppNovember 25, 2011

Now now I know many of you just finished your holiday meal for thanksgiving. But now it's time to look forward to Christmas. I actually did my thanksgiving at the house 2 weeks ago so I've had some time to decorate. Here is my kitchen at the moment...

Nice... I'm totally going to copy your wreaths on windows (don't know why I never thought of that... suich a shame to only have them on the outside door for *other* people to enjoy!)

How did you get your garland to stay on your pendant posts?

Co-Co it was actually quite easy. It's not real garland so it has wire inside of it. I just hooked the wire onto the ring that holds the drop bar to the bracket at the top. Then I just proceeded to decorate with mini ornaments.

Here is a close up of the pendants with garland...

Never really thought of decorating my kitchen for Christmas, other than with the baking and other food that 'decorates' the counters so much of the season. But now I just might! Thanks for sharing your pics.

gjopp - Looks beautiful! Love the garland and wreaths. My kitchen decorating will most likely consist of demo and dust. Maybe I'll throw an ornament up and see how much dust settles on it. Good thread, hopefully more will contribute their kitchen decorating!

What a great idea to place garland on the lighting. I always decorated my kitchen because it is (was) the most used room in the house. We are living in temporary quarters and the decorations will be limited due to space. The temporary kitchen will have a few snowmen!

I have to say that one "red" ornament could be replaced with a "black" one. Go Hawks!

I've always decorated my light fixtures in the kitchen and dining room. Not sure if I have the energy to decorate at all this year. THough, I did put some things on my porch today. My house is still not completely done, my dining room is waiting for the wallpaper installer, then new furniture and drapes can get put in there. THe FR wall color needs changed, I'm waiting for my custom rug and I stil can't decide on coctail tables and entertainment unit.

So, for me this year, I think I need to focus on fininishing my rooms before I start seasonal decorating. Bah Hum Bug, that's how I feel this year !!

We spend most of our time in the kitchen/keeping room, so decorations make sense. The fresh tree will go in the keeping room in a couple weeks. I put lights around the kitchen window yesterday (need to get fresh flowers for the vases). Garland on top of the hutch and a lighted manger on its counter. Little things here and there.

and a couple from last year:

The closest I come to decorating the kitchen for Xmas is when the Xmas cookies are baking. Luckily for me, our older ds (almost 10) loves to decorate, so I will see what he has planned. When I was a kid, I was very into decorating and wrapping presents. My mother would let me wrap everyone's but mine. I got that out of my system before our kids were born, so I decorate, but not over the top and mostly for their enjoyment. I am so thrilled our older ds is interested because that is one less thing I have to do. He put up the tree yesterday. I will "let" him do it for as long as he wants. I suspect in a year or 2, he will not be so gung ho. The younger one has no interest, so it will be back on me...

Just got back into town, so Christmas decorating will begin this week. I do decorate the kitchen, but I've been looking for new ideas, so keep the pics coming!

This is the one time of year that I do go all-out! Right after Thanksgiving my regular dishes get put away and my "winter" dishes come out (Pfaltzgraff's "Snow Bear")...they're used until spring :-)

Our FP mantle will soon be brimming with angels, trees, reindeer, and snowmen! The snowmen & trees will stay until the first day of spring! (I grew up in western NY where snowmen were around until April or even, occasionally, May!)

The tree will go up as soon as we find time to get one...I like to wait a week or two so the tree will last until January 6, at least!

buehl - As you know, all roads lead back to WNY!!! Still in the 50's here now, but that could change in an instant. I'm in Derby (between Hamburg and Angola) - where are you from? Post your decorating when you can! My lights are up ouside, but so far that is it. Needed to get it done...since they might not come down until April/May :)..or whenever the kids snowmen melt!

OK, Jgopp... Not as good as yours, but inspired by you to at least try... We've never had lights in the kitchen or anything decorating the stair railing. This is what I have so far:

We got this Nativity set the first Christmas we were married (1985)... But year before last, a raccoon got into our storage room and knocked it down, and this is all that remains... and Donkey has only one ear. At least we still have the Star of the show. :-)

natal, I'm going briefly off-topic to ask the color/name of your granite. (also, I just looked again and noticed your Asian cabinet - nice!)

and rhome410, is the surround area of your range green? (I really like it, whatever it is).

jgopp, your decorations look great. I love what I've seen of your home. Are there photos of other rooms on other boards at GW?

nursetammi, I love your columned island. Did you have load-bearing issues that required columns?

LRy511, the ornaments look great (IMHO) without the shade. I like the simplicity against the starkness of the grove of trees. I thought the blue window was my favorite but I just noticed the view out the gold ornamented window! Beautiful! (I am a view addict)

joyce_6333, nice balls and greenery against the Craftsman background.

Thanks everyone for sharing your photos.

LRy511, I love that idea! All of our windows but the kitchen are without window treatments. We've always done lights, but I'd never thought of ornaments.

Leia, thanks...our range area is light gray...Actually, the same color that's on the walls by the stairs. BM Sabre Gray. It seems to come across greenish in photos on some computers, but not in person. --I don't think, anyway. ;-)

We did have load-bearing issues that required a column. We basically took the back brick wall of the house off. The column on the right is load bearing, the other is decorative for symmetry.

I love seeing everyone's decorations! I tend to get in a rut with what I do one year to another, probably because it is quicker that way. Christmas is a busy time of year for me -- I've got four parties at my house next week, not to mention the extra goings-on at church. But as a person who loves change, I'm always looking for inspiration and new ideas.

Here are some pics of some of my kitchen decorations -- as someone said earlier in this thread, might as well decorate the kitchen, it's where everyone always hangs out!

Thanks Sidney and jgopp! I don't really have many shelves or occasional tables so use my island and dining table to display my stuff. For big dinners and parties I set up buffet on my cooktop side of island and use the other side for gathering. It works out perfectly. Beautiful decorations in gorgeous homes! It is amazing to see such unique and interesting decorations using items most of us have/what is available in stores as a jumping off point and going from there.

With my pics you will get a sneak peak of last weekend's project...installing the backsplash tile (yay!). It is Kukai Silk 1x2 glass tile inspired by GW'er jakabedy (thank you!). We love it. Still need to grout, possibly tomorrow's project before I head in to work for 2nd shift.

So, we are slowly decorating around projects and keeping it simple this year. Our dining room is in transition from make-shift kitchen during remodel to DIY area such as painting a new tv stand (60% off, I couldn't resist). I will need to clean the dining room before Christmas brunch/dinner.

Enjoy. Happy Holidays to all! ~Jenn

Come on in! Wreath purchased from my daughter's FFA fundraiser. I added spray painted star and simple ribbon. With the mild weather we have been having here in New England I was able to paint the front door from white to BM Carbon Copy which is a deep purple, almost black.

Broken crock I use all year round. The back has a small piece missing and I leave it out all year. In the spring/summer I place over peonies before they get too tall and it holds them upright and looks great, in the fall it is filled with pumpkins, straw, feathers, and in the winter, berries and greens from the yard.

Old drawer used to hold holiday cards. See the tile. I love it! I can use any color to compliment the kitchen.

Mantle. Sorry about the streaks in the mirror. lol.

Tree in 3-season porch (cell phone=blurry pic) just after 1st lighting of the season.

Small etagere I bought last weekend and added a new coat of black spray paint. Daughter's Santa hat that she wears daily. Trim still needs final coat of paint (excuse the dog hairs).

Michael's wreath and ribbon using 50% off coupons. PB crock I bought many years ago. I have a larger one that holds sponges, scrubbers, etc. Still need to grout and final coat of paint on walls and trim.

Old pair of wooden skis my sister-in-law, a florist in NH Lakes Region, turned into a floral decoration. I love it!

Clean part of the kitchen! lol.

Everybody has been busy! Love all the wreaths and sparkling lights. Are those river birch candles in the FP? I recently looked for some but couldn't find locally.

Came back to post the small tree on our island. It's decorated with wooden and paper mache ornaments - several given to us when we married (the day after Christmas) by my aunt and others used on our den tree when the children were growing up.

Kitchy part of my decorating this year - the pitcher and a dozen mugs were painted by a local lady in the early 70s. My dad bought the set for Mom one year. She just recently gave to me, and I know she will enjoy seeing. The three small wooden squares next to feather tree are Christmas games (get the metal ball in the hole) with Santa, a snowman and a reindeer. Kids used to play with them each year. The handprint wreath was made by DS in K, 1991.

Here is a thread in Decorating with more pictures around the house if anyone is interested. Just posted, so scroll down...

I haven't posted my finished kitchen pics yet since I just got my backsplash installed 3 days ago, but I wanted to share some of my Christmas decorations.

thank you, natal! All the other kitchens are so elegantly decorated that mine sure doesn't compare, but it's hard to beat Mother Nature.

cheers

KA: where did you get the little towel holder on the counter in photo 1? That's really cute, I love it.

Hi Mellie...

I get asked that question soooo often from other GW people..I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond..but I haven't seen it there lately. Your best bet is to look online for something similar...Good Luck!

If no luck at Bed Bath&Beyond, Amazon had a lot of French wrought iron looking decor that I stumbled upon recently. Don't remember if there was a towel holder.
