Painted and stained cabinents still "in"

kittenkat_2002November 15, 2013

This forum was so incredibly helpful when we redid our kitchen a few years ago that I'm hoping you all can help with a cabinet question.

For your reference, our kitchen is a medium stained cherry with soapstone and marble on the island. We're getting bids to put built ins including a desk in our office space off the main living area. I really want to do white painted with maple tops, but one of the hutch style pieces is going to house items for for kids. Do I make that piece all maple to avoid chipping? Is it still "in" to do a combination of painted and stained woods?

I have white painted cabinets (and have for 7 years) in my kitchen and have had just a few minor chips here and there that have been easy to touch up. I have two kids. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you think it is going to see lots of heavy abuse. The factory applied finished are really pretty durable.

Our new kitchen will have soapstone perimeter and a marble island. Do you have any regrets about your counter top choices?

Thank you! I love love love the marble, I actually fine it easier to clean up messes on it than the SS. The marble has an awesome sealer, wish I knew what it was, and we haven't had any staining and minimal etching.
