help with dark wood color for painting cabinets

aokat15September 7, 2012

Hi all - I'm looking to do a bar area in my basement and want to reuse the painted cabinets that were in my kitchen before the reno. I wanted to see if anyone could help with pics or paint colors for cabinets that look like a medium/dark stained wood. Probably more brown than red tones but not as dark as an espresso. Don't know if anyone can help with this but I thought I'd check!! Thanks!!

Here is a link to an old HGTV show that I saved for inspiration. I love the color of the wood and cabinets in their basement "pub" that is about 2 min in. Thanks!

Glidden Sweet Tea is a color I've used that's a dark reddish brown that looks a lot like wood. If you drybrushed a bit of black on it carefully, you could even get a bit of "graining", similar to the faux bois finish of old.

Thanks so much! These look like great options. I'm also going to start another thread to see if anyone painted their cabinets a dark wood-like color and has pics.

We painted the kitchen cabinets a dark brown. The actual color is Sarasparilla by Olympic. The finish is Gloss.

Sleek Dark Chocolate Painted Cabinets
I showed you the kitchen cabinet reveal and now I'm gonna tell you how we did it. We used a Cabinet Transformation Kit from Rustoleum. The kit allows you to paint your cabinets without sanding. The color kit we chose was chocolate. It's the same one we used to transform the master bathroom cabinets as well.

two cans of spray paint later(Valspar satin java brown) it looks like this. I just taped off around the cabinetry and spray painted the cabinetry in place. I did take off the wood cornice on the light fixture as well as the cabinet doors and drawer fronts and painted those outside.

There are so many techniques these days for faux finishing furniture and walls. I've tried many of them with much success. For these cabinets I decided to use sponging, except I never really use a sponge. A lambswool pad works much better for me. I purchased a few of them at Home Depot. Blending the colors is much smoother using the lambswool.

I always sand lightly first. This makes the wood grab the paint much better. These cabinets were high gloss anyway, so they definitely needed a sanding. I painted the base coat a rusty orange-a scary color if you ask me. While the cabinet is still somewhat wet, I come along and blend a dark brown color over the orange, always moving my wrists and blending, blending, blending.

Above you can see more clearly the blended colors. Just for some additional detail to these cabinets, I ran some gold Rub & Buff on the edges of the panels. I always have this stuff on hand for adding decorative touches. I purchased mine at Michael's Craft store. It also comes in many different colors.

Repaint your kitchen cabinets without stripping or sanding, with hiqh-quality adhesion and great looks for $150 or less ... Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations
There are 35 kitchen cabinet colors in the Transformations line right now, add glaze and they offer 70 looks in all. They had a bundle of wood tones. I believe we were told that the Kona was selling like hotcakes. The good news, though, is that the paint in the kit is tinted at the store when you buy it. So, it's not an impossible thought that new color formulations could be developed.

Never_ending put gel stain over red painted cabinets and ended up with a cherry wood look (see pics in below link). I haven't gel stained over paint, but I did gel stain a (similarly non-porous) cheap laminate headboard to make it match some gel-stained oak dressers, and I think it turned out pretty good. So, if you want a little more depth than paint alone, gel staining is something to consider.
