install drawer slides on existing drawers

rhubarb_stalkerSeptember 4, 2010

We have four kitchen cabinet drawers which are awkward to open and close because they don't have drawer slides or any mechanical device to make the opening and closing an easy operation. Basically it's wood sliding on top of wood. What recommendations would you have to make the drawers slide smoothly? Is it possible to install drawer slides on existing drawers without too much fuss?

This would be a DIY project for someone who doesn't have a lot of woodworking equipment.

"What recommendations would you have to make the drawers slide smoothly?"

Try paraffin wax on the wood contact points that rub.
It may be all you need (especially if the srawers are not heavily loaded).

"Is it possible to install drawer slides on existing drawers without too much fuss?"

Generally no.

The space for the glides on each side of the drawer has to come from somewhere.
Making the drawers narrower is a common way to steal the space (at least 3/8 inch per side) needed.

There are a few retrofit options running around (rollers in the lower edge of the face frame is one) but none work in every application without adjusting the drawer box size.

Search for

retrofit drawer slides

A lot of stuff comes up that is meant for your situation. They won't all work, but it's worth looking for.
