Venting ORM

calyle7September 2, 2013

Just wondering if anyone has done this or knows if it can be done correctly?
I would like to vent my ORM out the wall behind the cabinet over the microwave and then up thru the roof. This way the venting will not be seen as I will have 3" between the cabinet and crown molding and the ceiling.
My only two options of cabinet heights were 18" and 24" with the 18" plus Crown molding I have 3" to ceiling with the 24" cabinet alone there is 1" so not enough for the crown molding.
I know people sometimes use a box to hide the venting but would like to eliminate that if possible.
Thanks for any help or suggestions...

Add a 3" riser board above the cabinets and under the molding? Mount the microwave a little higher? Making the duct turn into the wall will restrict airflow and add noise - though my previous ORMs were so noisy I don't think ductwork could've added to the din.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions But I am so short 5'1" I really hate to raise microwave up...it will be hard enough at the 18" from the range....

"Making the duct turn into the wall will restrict airflow and add noise"

I sure don't want that to happen...
Wondering "IF" it will be better to just Vent it straight up thru the ceiling.....Again I really don't want to do that because of having to come up with something to Hide the 3" of vent that will show...
Anyone have any ideas?
