Glass Countertops

donaleenSeptember 10, 2012

Some of you may remember my desire for a glass countertop. In particular, I am interested in ThinkGlass. Today I found and called an installer with some questions and ball park price for about 30 square feet of counter top. The estimate was 350-400 dollars a square foot. Gulp.

That includes material, glass sitting on stainless steel, LED lit.

Probably out of my price range...

I can tell you that my cesarstone counter top is made with recycled glass, and where the glass is, there are a few very tiny chips as it is no where near as strong as the quartz. So in addition to the cost, there's that.

Yes, saw one in a showroom the other day and assumed it should be cheaper than "solid" countertops, but no such luck. :-(

You dodged a bullet by not being able to afford those! Ii know a kitchen with glass counters that went in a little over 2 years ago, and before 2 years were out they had chips in the edges, including one chip that is literally almost 4 inches wide--that's right, a 4-inch chunk of the edge came off, apparently because someone knocked their coffee cup against it. Glass is very brittle. It's really not suited for an actual kitchen that people use to make meals!

Thinkglass is gorgeous. I, too, called them. Was too complicated and pricey for me. Shipping from Canada, separate installer, etc.

Someday I hope they get cheaper and people put them in.

I am thinking about how to introduce a bit of the look into my backsplash.
