Run 4" soapstone backplash behind rangetop?

dp1404September 26, 2012

We are doing soapstone counter tops and are thinking of going with straight 4" back splash of the same material in lieu of introducing yet another design element for the back splash.

The thought is that we only have one run of counter along the wall that we could put a back splash, but on that wall there are two windows and the range so there is very little real estate to do something different in terms of a tile or stone or whatever because I feel it would look too chopped up.

So we are leaning towards the 4" soapstone back splash along that run with painted surface above. Behind the range top we are thinking of the 4" back splash with a SST back splash above the soapstone in that area.

We are installing a wolf range top and I have two questions:

One, is there room behind the Wolf range top to run the 4" back splash

Two, if we could do that would it look silly and should we just do all SST behind the range top?

I would stop the 4 inch run and just do stainless behind the range.

I was thinking that too but would really like to see if it's an option. Anyone have any pictures depicting that?

My "inspiration kitchen" for my own kitchen renovation has a picture of the opposite (4" soapstone splash with stainless above the range only) however it may help you to either eliminate this or, conversely, decide in favour of it.

Pictures 2, 7 and 8 of the "English" kitchen.

dp1404 thank you very much. I think I like that look a lot.

Because we only have about 24" left of the range and about 8 feet right of the range it will give a nice continuous look.

Otherwise I think the 24" piece will look abandoned
