HELP!! How far above countertop

calyle7September 9, 2013

Electrician is here to put in outlets..I wanted the outlet cover to almost touch the countertop...He said they needed to be at least 1 and 1/2 inch above countertop...
What is the normal height?

I would put them about where he says. You need some room for the switch plate and some for backsplash material to go underneath. Typical is about 44" but you can go lower than that.

If you know what your backsplash is, put them the width of one tile above.

There is no code for minimum height above the counter, except that it needs to be above (not lying directly on the counter) and must be less than 20".

Having the receptacles almost touch the countertop is not typical. Ours is 42" above the finished floor.
