Slate or walnut butcher block on a cooktop island.

BarbaravAugust 30, 2014

I just received samples of slate from Sheldon Slate and they're beautiful! I also love walnut butcher block. I was wondering if anyone has either of these materials under a cooktop (mine will be induction)? How are they holding up, and do they require a boatload of maintenance? Thank you.

I'm not familiar with Sheldon Slate - is this a natural slate or a ceramic look alike. We have natural slate in our foyer and love it - but it does tend to flake. We knew that before installing it since we had it in a previous home.

There are quite a few posts on walnut and butcher block counters on the kitchen forum - you might want to check the search function at the bottom.

Thanks maire_cate. It's slate that's mined in Vermont I believe. Is your slate smooth or ridged more like an outdoor slate? I will check the forum for the walnut butcher block threads. Thanks.
