Thin Corian countertops--no plywood underneath possible?
A Corian fabricator I've been talking to about white 1/2" countertops said they usually install on top of solid plywood.
Is it possible to install Corian countertops directly on top of your cabinets, and leave only a thin edge exposed? I know a lot of Corian counters emulate the thicker look of granite or stone, but I actually really would live a 1/2" thick white edge. Possible?
I don't know about which solid state materials are stronger, or if they're all roughly in the same range. We also want to have a 10" overhang on two sides of a kitchen island (L-shaped counter-height bar) and if it's possible to do without supports, I'd vastly prefer that. I've looked into Hi-Macs a little but not much else.
Would thicker tops (Corian comes in 3/4" also) help the strength issue?
