Spice up 24" wide walk-in pantry door? Chalkboard?

CamGAugust 6, 2013

Our kitchen will have a walk-in pantry whose door is visible from the kitchen, dining room, and living room. We had hoped to do a chalkboard door for it (we have young kids and thought that would be fun). Now that I look at it the door online in 24" wide, as shown below, boy would the chalkboard door have a really narrow writing surface (looks like about 10" across is all).

We could always buy a door and put chalkboard paint on it, but unless we paint the whole door, it is a skinny writing surface, and if we paint the whole door, a lot of the writing surface will include molding molding between panels, and still not much flat space.

Anyone do anything neat for highly visible pantry doors? Thanks!

Get a plain cheap slab door instead of the fancy door. There will be plenty of room for a chalkboard on a 24" slab door, and it will only cost you $20 maybe. It will have the same "frame" effect if you have white woodwork, as the white woodwork will surround the black door.

I like the door alot. If you are thinking of the kids using I agree you likely want a bigger space. I was thinking of doing a glass panel in mine to make it more interesting. May I ask where you found that door?

Lmsscs, I think both jeld-wen and Masonite have chalkboard doors. Our gen just quoted us nearly a $300 increase for the chalk door, so they aren't cheap!

Hollysprings, that's a great idea I hadn't even considered. Thanks!
