Fireplace Mantel and Surround

dannysalDecember 27, 2012

Hello everyone,

This picture was taken by the previous owners of the house I bought last year. Would love some ideas how to improve my fireplace by adding a mantel and surrounds.

I am completely lost. The only thing I know for certain is I prefer wood (instead of stone).

Thank you!

Best thing to do is to look at houzz.com and get some ideas of what you'd like and not like. There is a great deal of flexibility to fireplace surrounds if you are willing to scrap what you've got and start anew. You can look at over mantels and no over mantels and painted wood surrounds and natural wood surrounds and stone or tile for around the firebox. Lots of options, so best to find an inspiration picture or several of them as a place to start.

Below are pictures of thousands of them. I agree the stone would look best.

Here is a link that might be useful: mantels

You have three widths there, emphasizing the width and lower aspect of that wall. I'd simplify it a bit -- bring it in and try to emphasize the height of the ceiling.
