Any opinions on floor stain brands for the DIY-er?

raee_gwJuly 6, 2013

My brother & I are taking on the floor staining and finishing.

I have heard Bona products mentioned as very good; any experience/opinions? What about other brands -- Minwax, Cabot, others?

I see that Sherwin-Williams makes an oil stain, but could I use that if I'd prefer to use a water-based finish?

Our professional flooring people used Bona and we are very happy with it. After watching them, we could do the staining/sealing/finish ourselves next time. Tricky part is getting it sanded just right before starting. Not sure we're competent to do that after watching it done. And we are extreme DIYers.

Does it work to stain, then apply tung oil?
