How do you handle a backsplash when you have no upper cabinets?

The common options would be:

To where the bottom edge of the upper cabinets would be.

To the ceiling.

To line up with some other design elements existing in the kitchen.

I'm contemplating no I think if I do do that, I'll go to the ceiling. But depending on my "splash" type it could be cost prohibitive for me too.
I like the look of the whole space "tiled" though.
