Island with both induction and gas. Layout issue

sojayJune 26, 2013

My island, which includes a cooktop, needs to be redone. It will have a 36" and an 18" cabinet on both sides, so 54"x 48" plus 6" overhang. My main prep area is standing on the side with no cabinet openings, so I can take a couple of steps to the right to get to the cooktop, and a step to the left to get to the sink opposite. A pullout garbage is right underneath. This works surprisingly well for me despite not having a typical work triangle.

Now I want to replace my 30" gas cooktop, and am almost sure I've made up my mind with what, but I'd like your imput, please. Since I have both gas and 240v, I'm thinking of getting the 30" Miele induction, AND the 12" Miele 2- burner gas combo unit.

With as little counter space in between as I can get away with, and with the gas burners pushed as far to the right edge as possible, leaving only space for a small utensil plate between the burners and the edge. (Which is what I have now.)

The countertop will be 2 1/4" deep, and the appliances have a low profile, so at least I don't have to worry about straddling them over two cabinets.

I like this plan for several reasons:
I can keep my nice non-magnetic pots
I can cook during power outages
I have the best of both worlds
There's enough space to spread out large simultaneous pots
The cost of the two units, combined 6 burners, is not a whole lot more than the 36" induction only with 5 burners

The cons are:
A larger cooking area will require a wider hood. Do you think the 42" zephyr

will be sufficient?
It will eat ino my current prep area.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

What is your ventilation setup if you are on an island? If you are getting a gas, I am curious why you prefer a 2 burner unit instad of the Miele single burner high BTU wok unit. Your induction should have plenty of spots for simmering pots.
