Choosing Wood Flooring Grade

cinjosJune 12, 2013

Hi all,
We have chosen a beautiful, warm, medium brown pre-finished maple for our kitchen (and whole main floor open concept). The flooring guy is encouraging us to get character grade with a low sheen because it's more natural and forgiving in a highly used family home (no pets, just lots of boys!).

I love the natural look, but am finally getting the beautiful kitchen of my dreams and I'm worried that it won't look as classy with a more rustic floor.

What are your thoughts on grade (character or select) and finish (high or low sheen)?

Thanks!
Cindy

What's the style of the home? A formal Colonial? A casual contemporary? A rustic cottage? Find out what the "bones" of the home's style are, and choose materials that fit that, including cabinetry, and you won't go wrong. Putting polished dark red floors in a Califorina bungalow would be just as wrong as putting in a rustic floor full of knots into a Greek Revival replica of Tara.

So true! Sorry - should have given a better picture.

We live in a 50's era backsplit. I would describe the style as casual, warm, bright, classic. Cabinetry will be shaker style, white perimeter with a warm reddish wood island. Counters will be river white granite.

Thanks!

How rustic is his version of "character grade"?

Some looks casual, and some looks like the dregs of the flooring mill.
