Integrated cable clamps in blue plastic boxes

cattledoggieDecember 14, 2009

This may be a dumb question regarding the integrated cable clamps in the blue plastic boxes. These clamps have a very sharp knife edge that appears to cut into the romex sheath when you push the wire through the clamp.

My concern is that given the pressure the sharp edge on this clamp exerts on the romex, over time it may cut through the wire insulation. So I find myself using a screwdriver to bend these clamps open as much as possible to reduce this pressure before installing the romex rather than simply pushing the romex through the clamp.

Am I just being overly anal about this?

The clamps are rated for NM.

If you bend them back (or break any off) they may no longer grab the cable correctly.
